Data Shards?

A mission in Act 3 — I've got to collect 8 Data Shards. This is the primary objective not an option. I've played this map twice for more than 6 turns, which is an optional objective, which is to complete the main objective within 6 turns. The problem is data shards never appear and I don't know what they look like? I have shattered every box and killed multiple enemies and moved in long chains, but no Data Shards???...Please advise since I can't advance in game without completing this mission. Thx.

Late to the party, but it took 18 turns for a big guy to finally drop any shards
