Note that scumvm now supports both Myst and Riven and is likely the best way to resolve all the issues now
Download scumvm from here, the windows download at the top of the list is the one you want;
https://www.scummvm.org/downloads/
These are the scumvm instructions for configuring new games, make you alread have Myst downloaded and installed you will just direct scumvm to its folder;
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/User_Manual/Adding_a_game_to_ScummVM
If you are still interested in the other instructions;
These are different instructions for getting save to work.
TO SAVE GAME:
1. Load Riven.
2. Select "New Game".
3. Once in the game, drag your mouse up as high as it can go and left-click. The options menu will appear (Yes, it was hidden).
4. Select file and Save as. Name your file anything but end it with ".rvn". (For example, my game is saved as hope.rvn)
Now, your game is saved. Press "crtl-s" to save it.
5. When you return to your game, press "new game" and then when inside the game, File > Open file > then select the game you previously saved.
"add a point here which may help: when I tried "file" -> "save as", I had a window where the text field to name my file was missing (or hidden?).
Whatever, if this happens, press start menu to come back to Windows, open file explorer, navigate to <steam-folder>\SteamApps\common\Riven , create an empty file "save1.rvn" (to do this, right click -> new -> text document, then right click on it -> rename it) , go back to Riven, "file" -> "save as" , select save1.rvn."
for using compatibility mode.
[whatever drive you have it on C for most people] -> Program Files [It might be Program Files (x86)] - Steam -> steamapps -> common -> Riven. That could be entirely wrong depending on where you installed it to, but basically you have to find the Riven folder. Within that folder, find the application. It should end in .exe. Right-click it and select properties. Click on the compatibility tab, try setting it to win xp service pack 3, if that does not fix the problem also try vista and me. Windowed mode also can help.
Try isolating to one processor and see if that resolves the crashing issue;
1. Under Steam Libraries Right click Riven
2. Select Properties
3. Set Launch options
4. Type /affinity 1 (Affinity 1 is core 0 Affinity 2 is core 1 You can choose which ever one you want)
5. Select Ok
