Right-click on the game in your Steam library, select properties, select the local files tab, and click “Verify Integrity of game cache”.
If that does not work try using compatability mode
Try using compatibility mode.
[whatever drive you have it on C for most people] -> Program Files [It might be Program Files (x86)] - Steam -> steamapps -> common -> realMyst. That could be entirely wrong depending on where you installed it to, but basically you have to find the realMyst folder. Within that folder, find the application. It should end in .exe. Right-click it and select properties. Click on the compatibility tab, try setting it to win xp service pack 3, if that does not fix the problem also try vista and me. Windowed mode also can help.
Note that when buying older games you are better off getting them from gog.com instead of steam. They will update the games themselves to try to keep them compatable with newer systems, so they are less likely to have issues from them.
I think your suggestion regarding gog.com may be my best and only option. I only wish I knew about it before.
Rock on Noitalever.
