Welcome to the world of VNs.
This is a very long one, so you may want to start with some shorter ones first.
If you just want to know how good most people think it is, look at vndb.org it is ranked 16 out of the 21,200 vns on there. You can also read the steam reviews, Aspirety wrote a detailed review about it.
I imported the game years back (when a english version was unthinkable) and easily got a good 120+ hours of gameplay from it so it has that going for it BUT, the story is something in its self, there are few stories in the world which will beat this one in impact, the anime wasn't terrible and was probably a okay adaption but it didn't hit the nail that is our feelings like the game does, the story will make you feel teary eyed in both character unique stories and the "true ending".
Equally, characters are loveable and it is tough to choose whoose route you will take first, then after playing them all, it is even harder to decides who you liked the most, they are that good.
My advice, grab it now whilst it is on sale and whilst i do think the price is worth it (you will understand after you beat it in full), if you finish it and somehow think otherwise, then in the future you can look back and think twice, if however you enjoy it (im certain you will if you like VN's) then you can look back and remember just how great it was and sometimes the extra bit of cash is justified by amazing story telling.
the game also features two main mini games (and some other one off games) in the form of baseball practise (it might not look or sound much but it becomes oddly addictive, before the ENG version i saved on the May 25th (if i remember correctly this was the date) just because i would load it as it is the one day which features 3 practise chances. Then there is the battle ranking system, built mostly around luck and difficult to win until you beat several routes (Rin + Riki gain more stats through each playthrough, the story will help explain why this is and it is interestingly relevant knowledge) which whilst it is luck based and doesn't have much direct interaction, it is just plain fun to aim for the top (and if you can, summon/beat "Saito").
So yeah, one of a kind game in my eyes, i can't convince you more without saying just this once to take a chance and try for yourself (honestly, you wont regret it)
Why do YOU think people think $28 is a lot? Here's a few I think:
1. Greed
2. Poor
And that's about all I can come up with.
No, go away. I dont want you anywhere near my beloved little busters game.
The cost aside this is the best VN I've ever read.
