Offline mode

Does this game have a separate offline mode, or does even the Single Player mentioned on the store page require a server connection?

I've noticed a few posts commenting on not playing if the game can't find connection to a server, and losing progress. Is that because the game always requires a server connection? Or are those maybe bugs that are since fixed?

I get that multiplayer/online is a big aspect of this game (the clue is in the name,hey) but I'm one of those people who'd just like to mess around offline/solo.
