The crash happens on a PC and account that never played the game before. The new version of the game somehow fails to create a savegame from what I see. Running Legacy version created a savegame properly and this solved the problem.
The thing is that the old version had a different format of saves and when you go to the new version, this save is overwritten by the new format. Apparently something went wrong for you. You can try to delete the above folder and run the new version.
To replicate without wiping you can try to temporarily rename the savegame file in the code and see how it will crash.
I think I was able to fix this bug.
