Strange stones

i've found a few of those weird stones with faces that are 'activated' but there's a lot more 'unactivated' ones all over the map. is there something i have to do to get them to 'activate'?

also what's with the paw marks on certain things? some stones had them and i broke them, but there's one on the fallen giant and it doesn't seem to do anything

If you come across an activated stone (called a "totem"), talk to it and it'll ask you three questions. Answer those questions correctly and you'll get a free Power Paw, which will increase your max health! Certain ones only activate in certain seasons.

As for the other pawmarks, each one indicates that you can earn a Power Paw there. You just have to work out what to do in that specific spot. For example, there's a paw symbol on a specific fallen log (the Fallen Giant you mentioned). If you walk through that fallen log, you'll get a Power Paw. There's another around the roots of a tree and if you walk around the tree once you'll unlock that paw. Some of them unlock if you just step on the pawprint marks.
