The reason why I'm not good enough in "aunthentic" difficulty is because :
- lack of enemy tagging, I have to be aware of them myself
- no red dot appear while emptying lung. But I love this one though. This made every shots really important, and should be fatal. Just it actually made the sniping part 10x harder, since I wouldn't be succesful in the first try
About studying the enemy movement, is there something that I should be aware of? Maybe it is just me, but their AI are could turn from understandable to unpredictable sometimes. For example when I made a simple noise (*accidentally pressed 'C', causing my character to stand up while I'm still*) they turned into 'alert mode' and never return to 'at ease' mode.
* also, in what sense changing stance from crouching to standing up while staying still induces noice? or is it just me?
My best suggestion would be to sequester yourself into a sufficiently long hallway where you can shoot them one at a time. Set up traps to protect any blind spots, and then just shoot one to alert the rest and take them out as they come. It's all about limiting the ways they can get to you.
At some points, you'll get into "counter sniping" scenarios, which really are the absolute worst, especially on SE difficulty. The simplest way to handle those is to simply run out of cover, get shot, determine where they are (possibly dying in the process), rush back to cover, and then slowly creep around the cover until you can hit their hitbox before they hit yours. Worked for me, and I was able to brute-force my way through the campaign before summarily deleting the game from my hard drive.
I don't know if you can still get achievements with the "Custom" difficulty, but if you can and those are what you're looking for, I'd suggest choosing that option and simply toggling the enemy AI to be less "difficult," which paradoxically makes for a better overall experience. You can toggle the targeting aids and such on and off as well.
