DLC Mentors

So I just bought this game and I noticed that I can pick one of the DLC mentors if I want to. They need 2000 points (Way more than the others) and the reward is "Ninja master unlocked"

When I look at the rewards info however, it says I need to buy the DLC to get rewards, so which is it?

Do I get to use DLC characters as mentors for free if I accumulate 2000 points or what? This just seems super confusing.

I believe you get to use the DLC character as a player in matches, but you won't be able to learn their jutsu or get their costumes.
