Is the game supposed to not look crystal clear?
Hey guys,

Is the game supposed to not look crystal clear?
I don't remember how it was for PE, but I have both the normal and steam version of W Happiness and as soon as I load it up, I can see the images dont look sharp. It starts with a small window and when I full screen it, the image quality gets bad. well.. not bad, but also not 1080p, which my screen is.

In the popup box that appears on first launch, which i cant summon anymore? It also shows a smaller 'native' resolution or something. Stupid thing is I cant fully remember and I have no idea how to get that box to pop up again and show me what it says.

Does anyone else with a 1080p+ screen have not-so-optimal quality on their hands? If not, how do I change that? This game needs to be played with crisp picture.

Also, does anyone know a hotkey to start and stop auto mode? I thought PE had them, but the keyboard layout in the config in this game doesnt show it and we cant remap it, soo.... thatd be a bummer. I hate cursors in my VNs,
https://img.memecdn.com/when-mouse-cursor-doesn-amp-039-t-disappear-while-watching-a-movie_o_3053773.jpg
so I use auto mode almost all the time. Hotkeys would be nice. I can only see f8 is the auto play speed? I havent actually gotten past the menu yet because I dont want to start without my possible quality issue getting fixed.

F7 might say Auto Mode Play Speed on the shortcut page, but that is just plain auto mode using the speed set for auto mode. Also, the game's native resolution is 1-24 x 600. You can get a window for window settings to appear by setting the game to use window mode and clicking the oprion below it for advanced Window Mode settings. This also affects fullscreen to an extent also, since it allows you to set it to use CPU or GPU scaling, with best results being from GPU using PS 3.0, but only if your computer has a dedicated GPU, such as the Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti I have in mine. Intel Graphics wouldn't work very well. I personally haven't had any trouble on my 1600x900 monitor in gull screen. I don't like a cursor on my screen either, so I just use fullscreen mode and put the cursor on the bottom of the screen and just click through text with the mouse in my hand. Anywhere on the screen allows advancing text.

Hmm ok well I have a laptop, but with dedicated and integrated AMD Dual Graphics.

I just checked PE after re-installing and it gave me this: http://imgur.com/a/CrzNY

Looking at that I thought the game wasnt 1024x600, but that it recognized my monitor as such. I dont remember if I changed it or left it as default in PE, I read it 1,5 years ago.Thing is... 'dont change resolution' is checked, but the rest is greyed out. why give settings if you cant use them?

With many, many game launchers, actually all of them I think, I have noticed they absolutely dont recognise my dedicated card. Could it be a problem with that? I asked AMD, youtube, forums... and I have never gotten an answer to if it matters if launchers cant detect my dedicated card. After all, my Crimson settings do recognise the games and I can tweak settings there. I can also run Black Desert Online and Skyrim modded, so I would say my dedicated card does work.

But this doesnt change the state of my issues. To be honest, I don't fully understand your explanation? I can put it in Windowed mode, then change the settings, then to full screen? Or am I understanding you wrong?

yes. In windowed mode, it allows you to open the settings window back up. However, the window is more restrictive than the one for the original game, probably because it is just a fandisc for it. You can then change it back to fullscreen and the settings will still apply.

It worked, but when I change it to 1080p I just get a black box around a small window (in PE. I actually just decided to re-read the entire thing first..:P)
I'm wondering now WHY the game only really supports 1024x600.. I'd think only few people run such monitors. Why use such a very small resolution in this day and age? I really dont understand it. The artwork is beautiful, it should be enjoyed in higher res :(

This seems about the size of my mini tablet. But cant play it on there (would be amazing tho)

Unfortunately, it was only more recently that VNs even started using resolutions higher than 1024 x 768, which was the most common 4:3 monitor aspect ratio resolution before widescreen started taking over and after 800x600. Some have started going as high as 720p, also, but 1080p is normally only reached if the engine used supports upscaling that high. 720p is the most common resolution for native assetts lately. One thing you can try, though it may stretch the screen, is to modify the ini file in the game's directory. It should be easy to identify which values to change. The file is called ExHIBIT.ini. It is also the game's engine.

I just keep it windowed, for both games, since putting them in fullscreen ignores the "keep aspect ratio" setting which by necessity is going to cause some distortion on most monitors fullscreen because the game's native resolution (1024x600) is a nonstandard aspect ratio and there's no letter- or pillarboxing.

At least if you have a 16:10 monitor or something larger than 1080p, you can comfortably use the double window size. As a normal 1920x1080 pleb, I could go for a 1.5x window size setting...

Thanks for the tip on the ini file. It's really strange to me why VN creators only started switching late and haven't even adopted 1080p support yet. Why are they so far behind? Does it cost so much more? I mean... 1024x768 looks horrible on most screens nowadays and if kept in the proper small window you (or is it just me?) can barely see anything and nothing is clear. Way too small. Yeah... it boggles my mind for this day and age. Especially because artwork in VNs can be soooo good and it's a waste to not be able to fully enjoy it in all its glory. A real shame.
And compared to other VNs, PE is not cheap. Maybe just not enough copies sell for resolution vs cost?

The main issue with resolution is that they are made only intended for the Japanese, with localizations as an afterthought. Computers aren't nearly as common for gaming in Japan, either, which also cuts into how many VNs can be sold on PCs there, which is why a lot of them have also been being released on consoles and smartphones lately, when they are story-based, rather than erotic-based like most VNs that are not Nukige. Due to this, not many have really adopted a newer style computer monitor that supports HD. There may be quite a few, but a lot still use old CRT monitors and the like, since they aren't as wastefull as the west with just tossing old tech. In more recent years, though, more are starting to adopt HD resolutions for VNs, but they still sometimes keep it lower so the games can run on lower end systems.

hm. interesting. Though I know computers are less popular in Japan, I didnt know this also went for VNs. I thought PC was THE platform for them. So... what on earth do they read VNs on? With such tiny screens?
After all if I put it in 1024 I can barely read what it says. No ok I can, but the text just looks awfully cramped together like someone wanted to reduce the number of printed pages for a word document and used a way too small font size to reach their goal.

EDIT: maybe I am/we are just spoiled with the screens we have. Just having a laptop though, my size isn't even that big XD
