I've found like... 2 things in dumpsters. Am I doing it wrong? Do I just have to buy things from what's his face?

Buy the guts skill from the master hobo. You can now enter some doors by burning 1 will point. Pick the inspection or looking for Mr option and you'll be given the chance to steal. Sometimes you can get furniture. I used that to get my shelter level maxed out.

You also sometimes get tips from people you beg from on a house or business that might be giving away a piece of furniture. If you can find it, you can ask for that piece.

big rusty containers are best for finding furniture, but early in the game its very hard to find it, and even if you do... minigame is pain to beat with low dumpster diving level as furniture is usualy medium/hard to get
