Some tips for new players
I'm a couple days into playing this game which I found fun but doesn't have much in the way of guidance, I suppose in a way the minimalism is like being homeless. Now that I have some experience (I haven't died in a few days, it's winter, all my stats are under control and I have a reliable system for money) I decided to share some tips for people struggling

First, do the quests, they are not always immediately helpful but they will unlock other extremely useful quests, like being able to craft delicious (20 food scraps and a roll that costs 3 crowns gives 30 hunger and 10 hp and can be very helpful when you are dying)

2. the area around the pit has many boxes and containers with some free resources, find them all and do a lap once a day to collect free loot!

3. if you are choosing between begging, stealing and dumpster diving my advice is focus on begging early on just enough to cover the cost of items and food, and going to the bathroom or laundry, once you have the needed items to reset your stats or the money to buy them, start dumpster diving, there is loot galore, especially in bigger dumpsters, most of the time I just take hits head on because I can find better clothes, soap or items by dumpster diving, stealing comes with too many risks, getting caught by cops, running through lockpicks, having to do a minigame to collect the items and having very limited items, though I did easy lockers because you can cheese them by trying the lock twice, backing out if you cant find the right lock placement and trying again to save the lockpick and guarantee loot.

4. Items you will want on you: 3 ham sandwiches or delicious, a couple energy increasing drinks to help you make a run to the bed as your hp decreases when tired 2-4 health packs (probably last on list to get as they are expensive), and soap, (deodorant seems worse for the price but it's actually better because the secondary effect removes smell actively for a couple minutes removing all stink which will allow you to shop or talk to people for a while.
I keep meds on me, and the 50 crown light at the tobacco shops serves as a flashlight if you need it

these will keep your stats up in a pinch but I'd try to repair your clothes and keep them semi clean, go dumpster diving in spurts, use deodorant, buy what you need and go beg for money

5. an easy way to get money early is to do laps around the train station, sometimes you get 20-40 crowns, you can beg along the way and they tend to respawn change by the time you do a full lap

6. a more advanced tip and why dumpster diving takes such a lead end game is because the quality of loot substantially increases, and once you have double blue bars on special loot, you get around 20 crowns if you collect an item this way while dumpsterdiving and it's fairly easy to get both crowns and great items and clothing

7. keep all broken items and furniture as once you can repair the items they sell for up to 250 gold (so far) and whichever guy sells furniture also buys furniture for over 100 crowns a piece, I got about 2000 crowns in 5 min by unloading furniture I found that day

8.set down small objects in any hobo base or create items to set down for points

every base building objective you complete earns 5 points, every 10 points you can pick a buff while in your base, I took hp regen first but I'm not sure I need it, my stats are always good

9. I highly suggest memorizing the layout of important npcs and locations

when you leave your fist base up the stairs there are some phone booths and meters behind the stairs very close together

directly forward is a gas station with a bathroom, further forward and to the left there are large dumpsters, on the right is the everything shop, a laundromat and the mall with the pawn shop in the back alley with a fire can, even further forward on the left is the master hobo

if you instead take an immediate right you will be next to the bus station

if you find the labor office next to the police station you can get 100 crowns a day by street sweeping, the cathedral will give you a buff that regens morale

the charity is far out of the way in a back alley to the north of the map, it's out of the way I'd only bother if you are hurting for food, need cheaply washed clothes or a shower, or are desperate for clothes

10. the first things i'd work towards are patience from the master hobo, dumpster diving, engineering, willpower and the bedding/couch stuff to keep you insulated while sleeping

11. on the subject of sleeping, put a couch or bed next to your firepit and keep the firepit stocked right before resting so your heat wont drop, try to be 100% warm before sleeping as it will stay where it's at.

12. this is a little cheaty but I never have anywhere to set down my stuff and found if I move sideways and forward and jump at the same time im slightly faster, so I side jump to move because you do not regenerate stamina while over encumbered, I can carry about 80 pounds but I have 250 pounds worth of stuff on me

13. keep everything and don't just sell stuff to make a quick buck unless it's an emergency I know selling lvl 2 cloth for 30 crowns a piece is enticing but you will need it more later

there is probably other stuff but this is stuff it took me a while to figure out, other people are welcome to add tips as they learn

For the reparation about the selling stuff (vacuum cleaner, headphones, keybord...) if you don't have the parts you can always ask Monthy (a hobo NPC) to repair them and then sell them for quite a good amount of money. Don't sell them to the pawnshop except maybe at the begining to gain some trust, you gain much more amount of money by selling them to passers.

For all the rest I can't agree more, thanks for sharing your tips with us, as a survivial game it's always nice to have a kind of guide, much appriciated.

I agree with everything but i do recomend getting Dumster diving up to lvl 2 for the quest then doing the small trash cans and ash trays as they only have 2 shrapnel and you can do them safely slow exp but good for getting stuff for delicious and life bringer

Some additions:

You can check dumpsters right from the start, just stop after finding the shrapnell your skill level allows. This way you do not risk anything by checking and you slowly build up your skill.

Go to the charity DAILY.
If you have food, ask for clothes. If you are lucky the give good things.
If you have no food and risk to go hungry, ask for food.

Go to the church DAILY.
You get the morale regeneration buff for free each day.

Toilet, loundry and shower are cheapest at the charity. (even cheaper with the strategy perk).

I recommend building your shelter behind the mall, because it is the closest to the charity.

When finding special items (minigame) in containers, only do easy ones until you can afford to lounder and repair your clothes regulary. Else you risk getting a nice item at the price of stinking and freezing.

dismantling old dishs (pots) and toys gives a LOT of crafting XP.

Apples are cheap when fighting illness early on.

Cold resistance is the TOP priority early on (and pockets).
Wet resistance is nice, but can be neglected during the early days as just burning 2 pcs of junk completely dries you. (In Winter getting wet is deadly)

NEVER go 100% stinky. laundry and cleaning costs money, but it is well spent!

I actually disagree with a lot of this
the charity is really far out of the way from good loot areas and the stuff they give you is not as good as what you will find, and its limited to ONCE a day, waste of time strategizing around such limited potential and slows down your overall growth, being stinky is not that bad unless you are begging or shopping which is why you buy deodorant, for instant clean, its a waste of time and money trying to stay clean forever when un-needed

and stopping as soon as you hit shrapnel is inefficient, hitting as many dumpsters as possible you will find the soap and clothes needed to replace anything that breaks, pretty much just watch your hp and if you get the hp regen buff it doesn't matter anymore

I suggested trading the dumpster diving with begging to buy what you need if you are unlucky

but hard dumpsters have the best loot and most xp and should be tried first

I disagree, for this is a new player thread.
New players should play it safe and only start taking risks once they get experienced with the game mechanics.

For experienced i agree though.

Please for the love of god. can someone tell me if you can remove an item in base or not.... no information anywhere on the net. is there base building but no removal of structures?
Mr.X Nov 4, 2020 @ 12:13pm
hey matt, i beleive if you go into the menu before you press e to access items and look at an item, it should let you remove it, but you have to have the angle right
Wild Matt Nov 4, 2020 @ 12:45pm

What's this about blue lines/bars on loot? You talking furnature levels?
CreamyCowboy Mar 22, 2021 @ 11:52am
Something i didn't know and would've helped a lot ..

While you are in your base area, you can stash you goods that you don't need on you all the time like building supplies etc. Access your inventory, and the tab farthest to the right ( an open box ) is your base storage. I was slapping myself for not knowing this. I had so much at the lost and found, there was no way I could buy it all back.
