Both games are different in the way they play. MNC's mechanics are alot more fluid, and for me personally, is a much more enjoyable game, just don't expect to be able to play all of the time, as there aren't players at every hour of the day. The exsisting community does make efforts to get gamers together some nights. There are active groups that advertise events on Steam to get people playing, and it's mostly at times when most players would be available. MNC is a much more fast paced game compared to SMNC and it is also not balanced. However the community meta seems to provide it's own form of balance, people know what works and how to counter it. New players might find it hard to get a good grip on MNC though, as some players will just stomp anyone who attempts to take an interest, which can be a shame.
SMNC on the flipside, is my least favourite of the two, but it is the more popular; That said, it is going the same way as MNC. Queueing in the EU almost never works, as the player base really only exsists in NA now. SMNC is alot more slow paced, and in my opinion, is still unbalanced despite Uber's efforts to balance it. There are glaring inconsistencies in certain progression items that are just too powerful in their current state, and they have been that way for over a year, so they're not getting changed. Uber has once again abandoned another one of their games, to maintain focus on their newly gained IP, Planetary Annihilation.
In short, you have less to lose if you play SMNC, as it is free, and has alot more content and progression, but it is messy and alot of the progression is a needless falsehood, often forcing you to pay money anyway just to buy boosters to catch up with the rest of the community. In my opinion MNC is a less complicated yet more focused title. It isn't perfect and I'd advise you to watch some gameplay online before you put any money towards it, but compared to it's younger brother, it's weaknesses have been overcome by the community that still supports it. SMNC on the other hand is still a dog pit, and with the lack of dedicated servers, makes playing with friends or schedualing events alot more difficult than the jump-in/jump-out appeal of MNC.
