TLJ window resize with DxWnd
As it can be read below, the steam version can be "enhanced" with DxWnd, so the game can be run in a 1280x960 window which is good enough if you do not have a way to force integer scaling. Running the game in a double-sized window means that it is not blurry and you do not have to play in a tiny window nor lower desktop resolution or using virtual desktop. Of course the integral resolution is still the same (I think) which is 640x480. I would prefer to play the game this way.

However, a few problems still persist, like the size of the cutscene videos, some flickering, and unreadable object text. If anybody has any kind of solution to any of these problems with DxWnd or other program, please let me know. Thanks!

The setting that I changed in the DxWnd profile compared to the default values are:
- Main tab/Position:
Keep Aspect Ratio is crossed
X and Y is 0 while W and H are 1280 and 960
- DirectX tab:
Emulation is Locked Surface
- Libs tab:
GDI is Emulated Device Context
- Compat tab:
Fake Version is Windows XP

Did anybody tried to run the game with DxWnd? I could not run the steam version, because it did not found steam for whatever reason. So, I tried the gog version, which does not have this problem, while it still do not work properly. It throws up an error in primarysurface.cpp: "Rectangle provided was invalid." So, I am curious if anyone had any luck running the game with DxWnd?

this is how i got the steam version to work.
i was getting a bunch of difrent errors along the way including one very simler to yours onces i did everything below it worked perfict with no extra software.

"here is a list of everything you should do to run this game with hopefully zero issues some of these steps might be skippable for your situation but it would cuase no harm doing them anyway so id recomend doing them to be safe if you are not tech savy

i have given little explnations top try and help you understand why im doing each step

step 1:copy steam.dll file from the main steam dirctory to the longest journy folder
(this step was nessary for me as when i do step 3 it would give me an error saying it could not find steam if i skiped this)

step 2: go to "C:\Users\[username here]\AppData\Roaming\The Longest Journey"
step 2.a: open preferences.ini
step 2.b: starting at the direct x line make your settings match this
[DirectX]
GfxDriver=display
int_BitDepth=16
bool_IsDoubleBuffer=0
bool_UseHardware=0
bool_StartFullscreen=1
bool_ForceSingleBuffer=1
bool_ShadowsOn=1

(this is done becuse newer computers do not have the same directdraw driver that the game looks for and can not work)

step 3: set the game.exe compatbility setings to xp service pack2 and run as admin.

i hope this helps if you still have troble feel free to post cant promis ill be able to help but maybe somone else will be able to. goodluck and enjoy a great game!"

Thanks! The steam dll solved my first problem. I had no problem running the game vanilla, only when I wanted to start it with a DxWnd hook. It did not find steam. As I said I tried with the gog version, but I ultimately failed to double the window size, because the mouse and keyboard input lost in the process. However, it works with the steam version, so I can play the game in a 1280x960 window, which means that it is pixel-perfect and it is not blurred. It needed some tweaking in the DxWnd profile like selecting Emulated Device Context and Locked Surface (which solved the "Rectangle provided was invalid." problem) modes, but it seems like it is mostly working now. Only thing that is still broken is the cutscene video size, which is 640x480 still.

i have not realy used dxwind enogh to be able to help with other issues.
i just run it by itself as I dont want to have to deal with alot of the issues your talking about.

i get tired of fixing all the little issues so if i find somthing like the steps above that fix all the issues im happy to stick with it.

good luck geting it to work if you find all the right settings you should post them for others.

Right now, I am not sure if it worth it. Want to play through the game so I can go through the full stuff now that Chapters is completed. There are so many things wrong with the game when run with DxWnd, like flickering, sometimes black videos and other stuff. I have to accept that without proper integer scaling available from the desktop graphics panel this will not be better.
