how to run on windows 10

here is a list of everything you should do to run this game with hopefully zero issues some of these steps might be skippable for your situation but it would cuase no harm doing them anyway so id recomend doing them to be safe if you are not tech savy

i have given little explnations top try and help you understand why im doing each step

step 1:copy steam.dll file from the main steam dirctory to the longest journy folder
(this step was nessary for me as when i do step 3 it would give me an error saying it could not find steam if i skiped this)

step 2: go to "C:\Users\[username here]\AppData\Roaming\The Longest Journey"
step 2.a: open preferences.ini
step 2.b: starting at the direct x line make your settings match this

GfxDriver=display
int_BitDepth=16
bool_IsDoubleBuffer=0
bool_UseHardware=0
bool_StartFullscreen=1
bool_ForceSingleBuffer=1
bool_ShadowsOn=1



(this is done becuse newer computers do not have the same directdraw driver that the game looks for and can not work)

step 3: set the game.exe compatbility setings to xp service pack2 and run as admin.

Hey there, thanks for this, first of all. I just started the game, and it seems to be working fine on Windows 10 except for the Yes/No boxes can't be clicked.

I went to the preferences.ini and there's no DirectX section. Did I miss something?

if its not there you can just creat it and it should work.
this might not fix the yes no box issue but its worth a shot.

I'm having the same problem as Shabbagump re the text. When the game starts up the text boxes are there, but if I leave the game screen (by clicking the Windows key) all the text has disappeared when I return to the game. Even all the pages in the Options menu are blank. I have to exit the game (by feel, sine I can' actually see any exit options) then re-start. Does anyone have any solutions to this?

old games were realy not desined wth alt tabing out or minmizing the game window in mind. this is a newer feature then most games and thus can break things its like forcing a game made in the 90s to display in 3d sure it might work somewhat but it will probubly break a few things ad there was no way to do 3d when it was made.

if you abslutly need to be able to alt tab try playing it in windowed mode. when i try to do windowed mode it breaks the cutsceens but it might work for you

Thanks for your reply. I did try windowed mode after posting and, so far, it seems to be OK. Even with the little issues it has, I'm still enjoying the game!

That's fairly surprising as there's quite a few things that are now incompatible. What are your system specs. What's your graphics card and what cpu do you have?

If you paste that into the address bar on your pc it should take you there. What version of Windows do you have 7,8 or 10? If your still having double I may post a video guide if I have time

ok cant do it today but hope to get to it by tuseday. im using my free time today and tomarow to finish a game hopefully then on monday or tuseday use remaning free time to make the video.
