Broken water valve puzzle

I have read several walkthroughs and forums on this. Even though I quit and reload the game (after numerous tries to get this puzzle done) it does not reset (move the valves back to where they started). Therefore, trying to use the puzzle solution does not help. I actually got them back to where I think they began by viewing a screen shot in a video walkthrough, but following the solution did not complete the puzzle. Any help or a saved game file (after talking to landlord and getting gold ring but NOT going forward to the town center or anywhere else) would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much. This has made me realize I should save by chapters and not overwrite one game file so I can help others. I assume the save file goes under the name of the game in Steam common files, but apparently it has not been written there yet as I only have 2 folders and they are games I purchased through steam like this one but no The Longest Journey. Any help is greatly appreciated.
