The Longest Journey

The Longest Journey

Multiple endings?
I bought this back when it was originally released waaaay back when, but my lack of comprehension of what to do combined with the fragility of Windows 95 meant I never got far. Like, I never made it out of Newport. Ever. Went to the cafe`and it was always closed, told Zack to GTFO, that sort of thing.
I don't remember playing the other 2, either.
I do remember wanting to finish the game, but like I said, maybe it was too difficult for me at the time, or I was just too stupid.
I do know WIndows was to blame for a lot of it. Constant crashes, consuming the registry every other week.

Anyway, decided to pick up the trilogy on Steam the other day, and I've finally just finished this one. What an amazing story, and the level of detail in the dialogue! There were a lot of things that Skyrim lifted. If I'm not mistaken, Captain Nebevay is Belethor, and Tobias voiced a dragon.

All that aside, the ending I got confused me. Were there supposed to be multiple endings?

I was under the impression that they were trying to prevent the two worlds from reuniting because it would mean the end of purely magical creatures like the Venar? Yet at the end, when Old April is finishing up, they speak of the reunification of Stark and Arcadia. WTF?

I just finished the game. The character's goal was to prevent unification, but I took the ending to mean that at some point in the future unification became viable and desirable, even though it would have been catastrophic at the time of April's journey. I didn't come across anything in the game that expanded on this. I don't know if the sequels do, though.

The ending worked well for me, a bit of a hint that the relationship of Stark and Arcadia is a bit less simple than we might have imagined, but I think there's a tone of optimism to it.
