How to run the game in 2020 [Windows 10 64-bit, completed the game with not a single bug] : TLJHD Mod
So, the longest journey HD mod is the way to go if you have modern hardware and software. It not only removed all the bugs for me, but the HD textures and cutscenes were a bliss to my eyes.

Go to https://tljhd.github.io/

Follow the instructions step-by-step. Don't skip anything. I'll post here again.
Mod download [MEGA] : https://mega.nz/file/NioGhSSC#vU6JnYBbiDyVI9UPUpEUjMaXfof6qTcP-46yp8wdquU

Mod download [ModDB] : https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-longest-journey-hd/downloads/tljhd

1. Install The Longest Journey. If you don't own the game, you can buy it on GOG or Steam.

2. Download the main mod and extract the contents of TLJHD.zip to the game installation directory. If asked, overwrite all existing files. Make sure that the path to the mod looks like this: The Longest Journey\mods\TLJHD\. You can also download a pack of upscaled in-game videos — extract them to the game directory as well.

3. Download ResidualVM for your system and extract files to any folder. This is an essential step, because the original game engine doesn't support modified assets and overall have many issues on modern systems.

Residual VM link: https://mega.nz/file/k2QhVabS#z9r_Cnoy_QaKDn3PeObCs4tGR-FKPersL82_iGJh_78

4. Launch ResidualVM, click Add game... and choose the game (not the mod!) directory.

5. In the Graphics tab select Override global graphic settings and Fullscreen mode. Click OK.

6. Enable anti-aliasing for 3D models. Click Options (not Edit game, or it won't work) and select the level of Anti-aliasing in a drop-down list. From my experience 4x is more than enough.

7. Click Start to launch the game. Ignore the popup message and click Start anyway.

8. Enjoy the game!

EDIT: My MEGA links seems to get removed. This is my first ever post so I guess I just learnt MEGA links aren't allowed here. All of those links are available on the topmost GITHUB link though. Also check PCGAMINGWIKI for this and any other game you ever have problem with.

Hi, I tried this and in the step when I run Residual VM and select the folder ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\The Longest Journey" in my case) the tool says that it can't find any games in that folder :(
Have anyone had this problem before? thank you in advance

Are you sure the exe file is in that folder? maybe it's in a sub folder?

EDIT: Try installing the game in other drive than C: ?

I had the same issue and fixed it by downloading the latest daily build.

On Windows 10 you might get a SmartScreen warning because the file is so new; it is safe to ignore this. Let us know how you go.

I have the HD textures working but there's no text at all in the game.

Like no subtitles? Did you go inside the options menu and check the subtitles in the game?

Thanks for your responses. I downloaded the daily release instead of the stable one and that fixed my "game not found"problem (is actually stated in the web site, that you need the latest version to get TLJ working, so it was my bad for not reading through)
About the lack of text, yes, you need to manually enable the subtitles.
One more note is that the saved games from the regular version (Steam) are in a different format than the HD version, so you can't use the saved games from the Steam version.
Thanks again!

Follow the steps mentioned here. Increase the font size step by step until you are comfortable.

Steps:

1. Open gui.ini file in either the game install directory or %APPDATA%\The Longest Journey\gui.ini

2. For subtitles change these values:
bigfont=Slurry
bigheight=19

3. For tooltips change these values:
smallfont=Garamond
smallheight=11

4. Save the file and restart the game.

EITHER THE GAME INSTALL DIRECTORY OR APPDATA. Have you checked the game install directory?

Well, you can't. Since it's not a game per se. There's absolutely no harm in running the game through ResidualVM. The only downside I see is steam wouldn't be able to clock the playtime.

the HD mod is one of the greatest ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mods ever made, it makes the game look so good, especially in 4k, however i seem to be getting a mouse cursor artifact that shows a small rectangle of indecipherable text instead of the blue mouse cursor, is anyone else getting this problem?

edit: never mind i just deleted the gui.ini that was in the steam game directory and the annoying little artifact was gone, The game runs and looks so great now

This mod does magic, in a computer speaking way, let me explain,

I downloaded the mod fearing it wouldnt work with the spanish translation (the game had an oficial outstanding and rare spanish dub, but not on steam, you have to add it) so I just placed the translatio files into the mod files, not the original game files because i thought the mod doesnt add new HD text but just replaces the fonts. Thing is, it didnt asked me "are you sure you want to overwrite..." when doing so, so I looked and saw that the translation folder system is a bit different from the english folder system.

So I thought,Im screwed. I launched the ResidualVM, still says english, but wth, I launch the game through ResidualVM, and ITS IN FREAKING SPANISH; voices and all. With HD fonts, antialiasing, everything!

How?? Is the mod an AI or something?

Anyway, THANK YOU SO MUCH; you are my hero.
