You just have to play the tutorial and you'll see that option on the encampment.
Player 1 chooses any character you have unlocked, Player 2 plays with the dog character.
Is this local only, or can we play online co-op?
In case you lack a controller, you'd need to have some "virtual joystick", emulated gamepad to maybe make it available.
If you got two controllers, well, one player will need to leave it, and play on mouse/kb, from what I've tested.
I suggest in case you're playing a ranged character, to play on mouse/kb, and if you're playing the melee character, to play on gamepad instead.
Now for the co-op aspect, it's very asymmetrical, with the second player controlling an immortal dog/wolf good boy, which can roam around without triggering traps, attack the enemies for somewhat small damage, and do something which I don't know exactly what that traps them for a little while. If it wanders too far, it gets teleported to player 1.
No the "ideal" co-op setup, but works well, specially when the co-player is bad at roguelites, and having a full-fledged character with HP would actually make playing a roguelite together uplayable, so there's a silver lining.
I bought the game yesterday and gave the co-op a try using Parsec to play it online.
