The journal helps you with that problem. You have to put some things together...

The journal doesn't say anything about the bell. It talks about laboratory bags and hair, but I can't get into the lab to get any laboratory bags.

Hmm, did you use the right mouse button on the bell?
You have to disassemble the shovel and the broken knife. Then put the wood, the rope and the blade togehter. Then you have a working knife and can repair with that the bell.

The right mouse button is important for the game. Looking at things, getting by that way more information and you can disassemble items in the inventory with the right mouse button
