Stuck on basketball court

Literally incapable of picking anything up, even though I'm pressing down + X. I can pick up the basketballs and sometimes the art pellet but noting else works. I sometimes shows me a single frame of horace picking up the thing, but he never actually picks it up. I have no clue what's going on. It's not my gamepad either as it does the same thing on keyboard...

If this is a bug, it's gamebreaking, and I'd appreciate some help with resolving it.

maybe you accessed the court earlier than you're supposed to, head west first then come back later and you'll get an ability to carry them

Just in case you're still stuck with this...you need to hold down the buttons longer for heavier objects. So the basketball gets picked up instantly while the bigger items you need to hold "down + x" for a couple of seconds. Sort of like how it takes longer to "clean" a junk car, for example.

Yes, this was the issue. The game just didn't do a great job telling me I was doing it wrong (both in instructions or visual feedback).
