This helped me-
I levelled my char until i unlocked "augments" then used the augment "what I want" which gives you a far better chance of unlocking gear specifically for your char when completing matches.
I unlocked all my best gear this way and the augment helps a lot. It rarely gives you gear other than the char your using but you can still spend AGES grinding and not get the piece you want. I need the ninja mask for Raiden and have spent literally hundreds of hours and still the game wont drop it for me. I've read of some players spending 100's of hours grinding for Robin's "staff of grayson" ability and still never managed to get it.
Mother boxes are just pot luck i'm afraid. Build up a lot by completing the multiverse then do a big bulk in one go. If you cba to play the multiverse then make an AI loadout in customise character and just let it play the multiverse for you. Use a turbo button with a rubber band and just farm gear.
I (think) you get Batman and Superman gear from the story mode and you can get more if you complete it again but I could be totally wrong.
So it's totally random but you can increase you chances of specific character drops (not from mother boxes) with the right augment.
