Can you play different characters in story mode?

I havent really played any game like this since a few times with a past Mortal Kombat game. I dont remember which one, but is it possible to pick a character during the story mode and have a unique story play out for each character on the roster?

Or am I forced to choose between Batman or Superman or something?

You generally get to choose between two characters throughout the story. You'll have to play a wide variety of characters.

There's a story mode and then there's a kind of an arcade mode with the typical ending (comic style) cutscene at the end of it for each character. It's in the brother eye multiverse on the combat simulator world.
