Some people swear on the d-pad, for injustice the stick works perfectly fine, i guess you're more prone to making unwanted moves though, but i prefer the stick really.
Pro-Tip: in practice mode you see your inputs on the left side of the screen so do some moves and then you see wether it actually took what you intended to do.
Welcome to the game!

Some of them, especially the button mashing one is a common reflex you have. It's very important that you stop that as soon as possible =) that's when you can appreciate how not-hectic fighting games actually are.
Try inputing dash or special moves with analog sticks then try it with the d-pad. Compare the two and you'll be suprised.
As for controller, use what you're more comfortable with because it's doesn't really matter if you're new to the fighting games.
I use the PS4 Controller for fighting games though.
