Question regarding the surfing maps to the dev.
So, like, I know that for surf maps in Counter Strike and other Source games, for the surfing to work as intended, the server needs to have a boatload of console commands activated to do things like reduce friction or increase acceleration or whatever, otherwise, surfing becomes impossible. I know that these values can different from map to map, and settings that may be intended for one map would not work for another.

When creating Kreedz Climbing, how did this work? I mean, there's a bunch of maps, but do they each have their own customized settings? Or is it all a single set of settings?

Cheers.

Hi, in Kreedz Climbing all the necessary settings are condensed into one command, "sv_surf", this will automatically be enabled by the map (you'll see Surf Mode at the right side). In Kreedz Climbing movement modes can be applied per-course and per-area, meaning maps can give you the appropriate mode only when you need it. It's not necessary to manually configure any settings yourself. Hope that helps!

Hold on, how can all commands be condensed down into sv_surf if, in their respective games, these maps have different settings to one another? Like some might have higher air accelerate and stuff like that? How does that single command cover all the possible options?

The only command that needs to change to make surf maps work is sv_airacceleration which is what sv_surf modifies (surf = 100 AA and no jump slowdown, bhop mode is 50 AA no jump slowdown). There are no other pertinent commands needing modified to make the surf maps work in Kreedz Climbing, I'm not sure what other commands you'd change in other games?

Well, I'm not certain of how it all works myself (hence me asking), but a fair few websites mention how there are a bunch of different settings that affect how the surfing actually works.

https://www.tobyscs.com/cs-surf-settings/
https://killzonegaming.com/forum/topic/4002-combat-surf-commands/

I remember from my past experience years ago from downloading maps for source based games that certain settings are recommended for some, but not for others, at least according to the maps pages.

I figure that some maps might require more acceleration to make longer jumps, and possibly other settings as well. Just seems strange for all maps in Kreedz Climbing to have the same settings if there's such a wide variety of maps and settings that can alter how surfing works on em.

Again, my experience was years ago, but I do recall checking out map pages, even on steams workshops, and people suggesting using totally different values to each other, depending on the map, and it didn't seem like a one-size-fits-all deal.

I am in no way knowledgeable about this though, I'm likely totally off the mark, but yeah, that's where my questions stem from.

Is there a way for me to adjust those values in game? Console doesn't seem to recognize the same commands.

Also, is there a way to make my checkpoints, you know, "stick" during surf maps? It seems like when I try out surf, every time I set a checkpoint at the start of a map, as soon as I start surfing down a ramp, it removes the checkpoint and I can't warp back to it. Am I missing an option?

Cheers!

The commands from the websites are not used in Kreedz Climbing, the level of difficulty is set by the map itself (some have easy courses, hard courses etc) by having parts of the level geometry/settings turn on/off depending on the mapper. It's not necessary or desirable to change any settings manually. For maps that were ported from other games (like in the workshop) the mapper uses the features of Kreedz Climbing as said above to make manual changing of settings unnecessary.

Checkpoints have implications for the reward you get for completing a course (nochecking is considered better) and for achievements, so they're reset any time you restart the course. You can use /gototimer or /start (F4 by default) to return to the start point of the course, or use /setcustomposition and /setcustomposition_goto to set a permanent checkpoint (this can only be used on your own personal server).

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask!

I don't intend to ever stop asking questions!

Alright, for now, I have one more.

I feel like I'm going ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane here. On several surf maps, I seem to do mostly fine, I mean, I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ suck horribly, but things seem to work ok, and I have gotten fairly far on some of em. But I just tried surf utopia, and I literally cannot get past the first ramp. Once I start sliding down it, I can't seem to actually go UP on it. I just slide to the bottom, and then slide off.

Could you explain the reason for this? What am I doing wrong on this map?

Where did you get kz_surf_utopia from? I can't find it in the game's normal maps or workshop?

At the very bottom of the list. I've attached a screenshot.

I believe it downloaded from when I joined a random server or something.

Ah, in that case it's likely the settings for the map is missing, if I remember right kz_surf_utopia is from a very long time ago (over 10 years) back when Kreedz Climbing was just a mod, maps back then used special .cfg files to configure the settings for the map, it's likely you don't have that setting file because you downloaded the map from a server.

If you don't see "Surf Mode" at the right side of the screen ingame the air acceleration is wrong for the map, please try manually entering sv_surf 1 into the console (or /sv_surf 1 into chat) and try again?

Yup, that worked!

Awesome possum!

As a sidenote, I can confirm that playing surf_utopia from Create Server will load the map as a standard climb, meaning all forward momentum is lost once contact with the second ramp is made as if braking in standard Surf Mode by turning around.

Servers that use the map have it configured to enable sv_surf by default, but this is not baked into the map's settings; only server-side. Due to this, the momentum problem manifests.
