Gifts on erased characters?

Hi.
My first character was erased and since I've never used him, I hadn't used his gifts. Now he dropped his thingy which I used to equip on another girl, but I can't seem to be able to use the unspent points from his gift.
Does it mean that I lost it entirely? Should I always upgrade everyone's skill trees even if I'm not using them?

Yes, once a character has been erased, you can no longer level up their skills.
