The ending (spoilers)
From what i have understood, Mr Kotowari (the spirit obsessed with cutting necks and limbs with a huge pair of scissors) is a local deity ? When you discover a shrine with a human shaped symbol littered with trash, an engraved stone indicates it's to revere a god whose name ends with "wari" and it comes to your "rescue" when you say the catchphrase "I can't take it anymore".

'kotowari' means 'refuse' or 'cut off' in Japanese, and some people believe the legend that the scissors with mythical power can end unpleasant relationship as they can cut the wire.

Thank you, it explains the role of this spirit during Haru's quest. It must have gone awry because it is not revered as it used to.

Also note that people are said to be tied together by fate with a red string. For lovers, that string is attached to the little finger.
heavy spoiler do not see before finnish the game yes and he is trying to cut their relationship just from the beginning to the end.but our little girls too smart....just avoided all attacks.in other word.he is not just try to cut relationships between 2 girls, but also want to stop her from reseaching the fact and stop her to go to the mountain.(not only kotomari, the Yomawari helped too,he throw the girl to another town to protect her, before she read what yui left ).because go to the mountain will make her killed.

Well, i'm not so sure about Mr Yomawari. Protecting a little girl by putting her in a deathtrap factory ? It was more like a playground for a sneaky predator to punish naughty children wandering at night.
At least the catterpillar god proved once again being helpful...

in my opinion ,that's not a deathtrap.i see u played 1st game, the yomawari is a good guy.but maybe the way he doing thing is hard to understand .and a mount-god can not affect other town,so the factory is safe.and if she have read the letter yui left.she will go to the mountain.the yomawari is not try to harm her,but scaring her not leave this place.^_^

I see your point, thanks for the explanation about mount-gods, but is it not literally "overkill" for a Yomawari to take its beast form and kill the little girl when she tries to escape ? Maybe there are several Yomararis wandering in the region, but clearly the one encountered in the factory is malevolent : all it has to do to prevent the little girl from escaping is to keep its original form and use one of its bags to capture her and send her to square one. If the one who kidnapped Haru had any intention to help her, he did a truly poor job...

I wouldn't consider either Yomawari or Kotowari helpful. Yomawari are like many Japanese spirits and mythical beings. For example the Tengu. They can be either helpful, deceptive, or outright malevolent.

Kotowari too, when first encountered is definitely not being helpful. Until Haru cleans up the shrine, it's out for her neck. Only because she cleaned up the shrine and followed the ritual mentioned there, did it then decide to help; at a price.

A price? You mean that he cut off Haru's arm? No, he cut off it cause there wasn't other way to get free from the strings. Don't forge that these spirits (Yomawari and Kutowari) aren't humans, or spirit of humans. They are spirits with free will and a slightly different perspective.

And that's the price she had to pay. Yes, there was another way. She could have died and joined Yui. She chose to live, but had to pay for that by losing an arm. Likewise the girl in the first game had to pay with an eye in order to save her sister.

yes i agree with you.the PRICE is really an important key element in both Japanese culture and this game series. that is also the point im struggling about. The monument in game said Kotowari is a good guy,he replay to people's asking and save them.BUT if this is true. Why he is always cutting our girl in the town? Maybe because of his Shrine been covered with trash he is angry about this? Or trash covered symbol lost power and can not be his faverite target so he ran out and searching target in town?and the girl is the only person can be found in the night(so unlucky)?Or he really want to help and save Haru? because cut haru's connection earlier would stop her to go to the mountains------which may bring death to her.cut earlier will also destroy mountgod's plan.but this make no sense again.Kotowari only reply with requests.but haru didn't say anything but kotowari follows. Or Kotowari follow haru just want her to clean his shrine?(remind me of the first game the Centipede-God asked girl to help restore the shopping Street, but the way he doing this just like killing the girl XD).Or because dead YUI is crying "i can not stand anymore",but YUI is dead and she is with the mountgod so kotowari not able to cut,so he just catching HARU and cut. And why kotowari just do nothing and leave and disappear after sth be cut in girl's hands.OH I FEEL MY BRAIN ABOUT TO EXPLODE.

Way I see it, Kotowarisan is not being helpful until Haru says the key phrase. Before then, he is simply taking his anger out on everything else in the night. We see this in the dam when he's clearly attacking other spirits.

Once the shrine is cleaned up, the wards that control Kotowarisan's temper are activated again. You see he's stuck in a loop attacking the "neck" of the pathway. He calms down after that and hears Haru cry out the phrase to summon him.

The time when Yui encounters him, he's still in a state of rage, so I don't think he was trying to help her. And in all likelihood Kotowarisan never landed an attack on her. She spent the night being pulled to other locations, there's a good chance she was pulled away from Kotowarisan moments before his attack landed.
