OH, and you can put that purse into your Backpack too, even if it is filled with stuff.
Once you have your caravan going, and some storage, try to save all those scraps of cloth, leather, and metal you come across for later use. Your higher tier armor will be far more expensive to repair, and those scraps are far more cost effective repairing that than your low tier equipment.
Also, repair kits are extremely cost effective for high tier gear, as long as you use it on said gear before it is too damaged. Once you have high tier gear, it is a good idea to bring one, or two for long dungeons, repair kits on missions.
This lets you get to Denbrie in complete safety once you first get to Brynn. You can gather the salt there, and make a (somewhat dangerous) hike to Kendrick's homestead to get the recipe for meat omelette, one of the best foods in the game, very early on.
Though you can probably just buy a crossbow and take potshots at them which will be a lot faster and easier I guess.
Similarily, if you're struggling with food, you can butcher feral dogs or the dogs you find as part of bandit dungeons in order to get raw sinewy meat to turn into meat skewers for free by collecting sticks and mushrooms in the forest. Certain dungeons have swarms of dogs which can mean multiple 12% hunger food items in one room if you cook them all up. If you're near the coast, 2 seaweed and crab meat plus the sticks along the beach can let you make fish skewers which are also all free.
Leeches stabilize wounds AND heal bodypart damage even if the limb isnt cripples, take up a single slot, and are free and abundant in any river. You can collect dozens for 0 dollars and they never rot. They give you a small pain increase and take 30 turns to fully go into effect, so splints still have their use, but i've never found the need to use splints or buy healing salves after gathering a bunch of leeches. though you can craft splints now, so figure out what you want to do.
If you take the second left-side skill in the 'Warfare' tree you get various bonuses to stats while having a one-handed weapon with an empty offhand. These bonuses increase according to various things, for example, I didn't know that if you put points into perception not only do you get the stat bonuses from that, but each point of perception gives you -0.5% fumble chance with that skill. This means at 30 perception with a one-handed weapon you also get -15% fumble chance passively, which is a huge bonus to your consistency in combat and bonus.
I tried going with a ranged build mixed with 1h weapon but honestly, ranged is still better off with 2h weapon in the end due to the amount of crits you can get from high Prc.
Anyway, pro tips for newbies from me... Hmm... There is one, maybe two:

Don't be in a hurry to go to Denbrie or Rotten Willow Tavern, even though you might get the prompt fairly early on. If you take all the contracts, you can bounce between Osbrook and Mannshire pretty much forever. Save up all the jewelry that are made of gold or silver, as well as loot made of these material, and when you're ready to make a buck then go to Brynn and sell them all to the jewelry store there. (And while you're there, exchange all the ancient coins at the bank for crowns.)
It can be a bit slow, but if you go to Denbrie or RWT, it is best you have gear of that tier (Tier III or IV) before you attempt those T3-T4 dungeons. Therefore, rushing your way to Denbrie and RWT can really force you to spend a ton of savings on medicine, for example.
For caravan upgrades, always aim to get the chicken coop asap. Free food saves you tons of cash. After that, focus on the upgrade that increases food freshness duration (I forgot the ingame term for it sorry). Rather than trying to make tons of money in the early/mid game, it is easier to save tons of money instead. Because even if you go to a high-level dungeon, you'd burn through your money buying meds and repairing gear and upgrading old gear. (This is why grinding lowbie dungeons is always profitable.)

I don't exactly remember any tips and tricks that I had to facepalm myself to learn, tbh... Most things I learned in the game so far are just from trial and error, but nothing major.
This opens up the possiblity of alternate ending of brewery quest. If you go there following the road, you can then tell the "bandit" who sits at front gate "you don't look like a bandit". Agree to help the real owner. Then when you go confront the elder about lying, go ahead and extort him for cash. You should use that cash to buy up as many beer (you get one for free) as you can hold (do you use extra inventory mod?) before hoping on the cart and hitting the road, so you can sell them at the various inns in Mannshire. This adds up to a fair bit of cash. The only downside is a -450 reputation hit to Osbrook, but you can recover that with a single dungeon run later on. You can also stop by to pick up more beer later on, the brewer will always be selling it at 90% of base price, which means it's always going to give a small chunk of profit.
If you do the brewery quest the normal way you can still buy beer, but it will be sold without that 10% discount, which means a lot less profit margins. Also it takes a while for brewery to reopen.
Also if you get into trading commodities, you should know that you don't actually have to carry the goods, you can use the caravan's inventory if they are nearby. Look for a tiny easy to miss tab on the side of your inventory when trading that lets you switch to caravan's inventory.
The caravan inventory tip is awesome, however I have to point out that you can do the carpenter's pane subquest at any moment as long as you haven't declared war on the brewery mercenaries, no need to do it before accepting the brewery quest.
That's true, but if you do the quest BEFORE you get to asking him, you get the reward for giving him the plane AND the information for "free", rather than just the information for giving him the plane.
This seemed so out of theme for the game that it never occurred to me to try... Thanks!
