Ruined manor scripted event
To open up, I've played the game before the RtR update, not a lot, but enough to understand the basic mechanics and I've lost quite a few saves to permanent death before I switched to adventurer to learn the game. But today I found my breaking point in this game.

I was level 2 on my way to the second contract and stumbled upon the site. I did not know what it was and explored a bit, went to the cellar and took a nap since I thought it was nice the game let me save before the contract. Well turnt out it's an unbeatable scripted event that just borked that save, since I spent a bit trying to grab the boar head then went to save again after I decided I was not gonna take it on the way to the contract.

I tried running a few times, the ringleader is just faster and he charges, no matter what direction they are always too close to me once I get to map edge and they follow, lovely game design. At the end of the day it was barely a few hours into the save, but that left such a bad taste in my mouth I no longer want to launch the game. I wouldn't even care about losing if there was any indication that the location was a trap, no in-world hint or nothing, just get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and restart.

It'd be nice if there was actual hints that I miss, please let me know if that's the case. I probably won't ever launch the game again, just the thought of randomly soft-lock myself because I wanted to explore killed any enthusiasm I had for the game.

No, you are correct. That one can soft lock you. As far as I know, it is the only place in the game that can happen, and it has been around for a few years as is. But there is no warning about it, and if you do sleep twice in the bed, it can soft lock you.

If I remember correctly, complaints about it from years ago are one of the reasons they added the second save file... to minimize the odds of softlocks there.

I'm sorry to hear it killed your enthusiasm for the game. If it is any consolation, you did find the only case where such a softlock can occur. Good luck in all your endeavors, gaming, or otherwise!
That struck me as insane, too.

The placement of a bed in that particular location means that some sadistic dev fully intended for people to lose their save file, even if they didn't have permadeath selected.
Oh yeah, only place that does it, a relic of the past. I guess it was a nice start for the devs to implement events but they never introduced more or balanced the ones they had

Ever heard of Double saving when going out for Adventure? You have two slots and not updating the other is bad practice, in case other gets bugged or sheyt.

You went down a suspicious trapdoor so you took your chances willingly. Also, carrying a net or caltrop is a good idea.

Taking a nap wasn't such a good idea. Otherwise you could have alt-f4. Assuming you played perma.

I can't check if right now but IRRC if you read the description of the place in the map (by hoovering you mouse over it) it is ABUNDANTLY CLEAR that the place is inhabited by a gang.

So yeah, there was a clear hint that you missed.

Absolutely terrible argument.

You constantly do a lot of things that are much, much more dangerous than going down a "suspicious" (there's nothing suspicious about it, plenty of houses had an outside trapdoor to their basements" trapdoor.

The combination of "oh look, there's a nice bed" and "oh look, a legendary brigand god and his henchmen are arriving just as you're coming out" is obviously pure sadistic trolling, and it does introduce Permadeath to a non-permadeath characters.

There is no excuse for it.

I do not believe this was the intent.

When this was released, there were only 2 places you could save the game. The inns in the 2 towns. (Brynn and Denbrie were not out yet, nor were the Rotten willow or the Ralph and Son's) and players were DEMANDING more places to save their game.

This was released with the patch that allowed sleeping in camps to save the game. The intent was to give the players a base they could clean out and then use as their own. (remember, no caravan, no carts, had to walk everywhere, and a lot smaller a map then too)

Such a base would need a bed.

The implementation turned out a bit sadistic. But I do not believe that was the intent.

The choice of the Dev's to keep it that way AFTER they saw it was killing saves? That is your sadistic intent.

I suppose it could originally have been a huge oversight.

But yeah, keeping it in is 100% deliberate.

Rumor is seal of cleansing can remove the part of the curse that hurts you. Just have to deal with the foes who keep getting back up then.

Thanks for the reply yall, at least knowing it's the only spot I could ruin my save help. I might return to the game next update, but yea it's hard to break that disappointment now. Again, it was only a few hours save since I'm not even lvl 3, it's the design choice that really hurt.

Also, for the person that mentioned the note on the map, it does not hint that the place is inhabited, nor if it was dangerous. It spawns 3 tiles away from Osbrook, in the lowest level area that you dont even see more than 2 bandits at a time. In case anyone wondering, it states exactly " A dilapidated stone manor, long abandoned by its residents. Perhaps something of value can still be found there."

PS : In my initial excitement of stumbling upon the site, I thought it was meant as an outpost or camp away from town that the player can use as a base like the shed in the Mill. That was one of the reason why I felt very comfortable saving there, since I spent sometime running around the overworld before going down to the cellar to make sure it wasn't gonna kill me.

True, they might have changed the description or i remember it from somewhere else.

Just as a side note, you can actually cheese this encounter by placing a wall of fireplaces between the hatchet and the wall from the manor so you can easily escape without a fight once you get out. That way discovering this manor early game can be a huge boon of loot. I'm not reccomending to do that, i'm just saying its possible.

Well, I solved the problem, game cheesed me so I cheesed it back, I moved over a tile and normally the bandits would just follow since they are too close when I change tile, but I just save and loaded and they gone. In case if anyone ran into the same issue. My friend showed me his troll kill and that itches me enough to give it another try, cheers.
