If you can manage your energy and other drawbacks, you can still wear heaviest pieces of armor in your hands and head. They shouldn't have any dodge penalties.
So long as you have at least some means of mitigating damage, heavy armor is very useful. I don't think relying on armor itself solely is effective or economical; you'll preferably want to take the fight out of your enemy first, or defend yourself by other means like blocking or Stone Armor. Taking unmitigated blows into your heavy plate won't negate all effects of powerful enemy attacks and it wears down, mounting maintenance costs. But maybe this is all redundant information that doesn't need to be repeated...
Using two-handed sword, I think switching to weapon or even just enchantment with increased body part damage offers at least as much defensively as it does offensively...
Otherwise I recommend mixing magic with a weapon that synergizes with it. Like Geomancy + Maces work really well together, you can knock people into your boulders to confuse/stun them, it's pretty fun.
Spears + Lightning is kinda cool too, but you want to lay out your build in advance there and maybe get some treatises.
