I guess i can suggest some gear options, but since i don't know at what point in the game you are i have to give them all:
HELM: From the start you can buy from the Smith a Skadian Helmet (1.7k gold) then when you get to Benevolence reputation in Osbrook or when you travel to Mannshire and are just at Neutrality reputation the Smiths can sell you an Open Bascinet or Sallet (2.7k gold) which you can upgrade to a Heavy Barbute or Wolf Ribs Bascinet (2.7k gold) when you get to Amity reputation in Mannshire or Respect in Osbrook. Lastly and not really needed is a Below Face Sallet (4.6k gold) when you get at Respect reputation in Mannshire, and i usually get it after the Troll fight when i'm just overleveling and maxing reputation because not much else to do with the current development.
ARMOR: From the start you can buy from the Tailor a Lamellar Quilted Coat (2.5k gold) then when you get to Benevolence reputation in Osbrook or when you travel to Mannshire and are just at Neutrality reputation the Smiths can sell you a Skadian Yushman (3.6k gold) which you will upgrade to a Hauberk (8.4k gold) when you get to Amity reputation in Mannshire and i don't think you can get it at Respect in Osbrook, the Smith there doesn't have an extensive armor stock in general.
GLOVES: From the start you can buy from the Smith some Splint Vambraces (550 gold) which you can upgrade to Brigantine Gloves (don't know price, i sometimes skip these) when you get to Benevolence reputation in Osbrook or when you travel to Mannshire and are just at Neutrality reputation. Lastly when you get to Amity reputation in Mannshire or Respect in Osbrook you can buy the Sergeant Gloves (3k gold).
BOOTS: From the start you can buy from the Tailor some Tanned Boots which i never upgrade, since i think they are the best at offering some Bleed and Move Resistance while other boots don't and have penalties to NRG and NRG regen and make skills cost more.
BELT: From the start you can buy from the Smith a Knightly Girdle (400 gold) and like boots i think it's best and i just keep it forever.
JEWELRY: Is usually whatever until mid/late game when you decide to get two Silver Ruby Rings from the general merchant, i believe they start to show up at Benevolence in Osbrook or at Neutrality in Mannshire but it may be at one reputation level higher. Also 2H swords have good NRG refillment with the Taste of Victory passive but until you get that or if you just need more NRG upgrade to Gold Ruby Rings when you get to Amity in Mannshire, i don't think respect in Osbrook can get these. And early on find some time to do the drunkard's task and get the Fang Amulet or find the Which Hut since that one also has a Fang Amulet, sometimes up to rare, hopefully not cursed or maybe one of the bearable curses. The Hand Amulet from the Abbey interior is also good but you can't enchant it since it's unique.
Also for enchantments get the % Physical Resistance on armor and jewelry pieces and % Life Drain on weapon. For now until the Enchantment System is completed you can use this https://steamcommunity.com/app/625960/discussions/0/3007808519568346196/ to get the desired enchantment and not have to save scum.
WEAPON: From the start you can buy from the Smith a Bastard Sword (1.6k gold) and i only upgraded it to a Sergeant Bastard Sword (6.3k gold) when i got to Amity reputation in Mannshire or Respect in Osbrook. I essentially skipped the Footman Two-Hander from Amity reputation in Mannshire or Respect in Osbrook and didn't go up to Longsword at Respect reputation in Mannshire because even those can be upgrades i just don't like their higher Fumble chance.
Speaking of which i think it's best to use some of the COMBAT MASTERY and ATHLETICS support skills, these i usually pick up before i even get the weapon skills, because i think they help me more. Or maybe it's just me that hates to read the log and see i fumbled or occasional missed an attack.
For ex in COMBAT MASTERY the Seize Initiative applied on enemy before any other weapon skills helps me reduce my Fumble and increases my ACC plus other benefits, and also Offensive Tactic is a general buff before every fight i take.
Then on a defensive side in ATHLETICS i use Elusiveness when i know an enemy will use a certain skill vs me that i best avoid or preferably several enemies will do it at once, so in turn i can bait them and get more turns and stacks on Elusiveness's afterbuff, thou be aware that some skills can still hit you even with Elusiveness on, nevertheless it's still good to use even if it's not a guarantied avoidance all the time. And Dash also helps with avoiding combat by running away when in trouble or just distancing myself to allow the enemy to waste their buffs like Stances or Raise Shield on walking towards me, instead of me facing them buffed. Mighty Kick is also nice to potentially Stun if you kick them against something behind them, even kick them one into another if there are several enemies. Also sometimes good just to deny a Mighty Swing from low and mid tier 2H mace guys or hopefully not take dmg from anyone because they have to walk back towards me after i kick them one tile tile away, just be aware that some enemies have charge skills (like high tier 2H mace guy) so it's detrimental to kick them away. Also it can get you a stack buff on Seize Initiative for ex.
And for 2H sword skills in general get Feint Swing into Heroic Charge and most importantly the Stance will help you not miss and debuff and sometimes Crit enemies. You can even chain some kills with Heroic Charge which is always fun. Also i think pumping AGILITY helps you the most, thou both STRENGTH and AGILITY boost your skills, so either split your stat points between them or 2/3 in AGILITY and 1/3 in STRENGTH i think is best.
Let me know if you still have trouble after these suggestions or what it actually was that you were struggling with.
Arna is fine, greatswords can have a slight difficulty early on with fumbles etc so I would recommend taking seize the initiative (combat tree) as well as feint swing and heroic charge as your first 3 skills, so you have 2 attacks which cause stagger and a reliable damage source.
Before doing the 2nd contract explore some of the points of interest on the map, most of them are very easy and give decent rewards (some fixed loot, some random)
Buy 1 or 2 bear traps and try to use them to disable the most scary enemies and fill them with crossbow bolts instead of fighting in melee all the time, if you just go head to head with every enemy in a fair fight you risk getting injured.
Also in this post i explained how to deal with that 2nd Brigand dungeon boss:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/625960/discussions/0/3047234112555402537/#c3047234112555551599
If it's another dungeon and another boss, like the Necromancer or one of the Cult leaders i could give some tips on those, thou in reality i think only the Cult leader that is a gluttonous woman can be a challenge, but you can most likely avoid getting bleeds from her if you have Elusiveness, it's same strategy as for the Madman really.
As for character traits they are not super necessary, two times i've played without them as Verren (the prologue guy that turns into NPC in the adventure) and built him as Geomancer and a Staff wielder and these two are more controlling builds, one uses his environment more and other his mobility more but not much different in the end result of Staggering/Dazing/Stunning and basically disableing enemies, since they don't start with very powerful spells/skills and need to create an advantage. What i'm saying is having no trait on both of them didn't hinder me. And anyway Arna's trait is a very good one, i played her as 2H Sword, 1H Sword plus Shield and Dual Swords and all did more than fine. Jorgrim's trait helps you snowball kills and that is good in ambushes or whenever facing several enemies but damage wise it's not much different than the Heroism mental state that anyone can have applied when there are several enemies nearby.
I am not joking, crossbow is an amazing thing for almost everyone at the start, it helps soften or kill enemies before they reach you and require no investment to be decent. After first few dungeons you will have decent gear, and you will fight way better with a sword, but untill then crossbow is a godsend.
