Will polearms be 2 handed only? Will there be 1 handed spears?
Spear&Shield was the most popular and common weapon for over 2000 years of human history, I kind of wish it would be represented at least.

I mean swords and axes and flails were not very common comparatively and yet they seem super common here, almost everyone has a club or a flail or a crude cleaver or axe, you'd think they'd just sharped a stick instead and glue together some boards if they're lacking money. Spears are super cheap to make, relatively easy to learn and really dangerous offering greater reach than swords. They're effective and efficient, they'd be a pretty good weapon especially early game.

Thrown versions could also be cool, you could make a Roman sword&shield legionaire type with a pilum to throw before fights.

A spear is a one hand weapon. Maybe you mixing this up with a pike, that's a polearm. So spear would need its own skill tree. It's there? I just played on release day. I can't remember.

I am not mixing anything up, right now there's no spears tree in the skills menu only a polearms menu. Which generally are 2 handed, but I kinda want a 1 handed option so that's why I am asking if there will be any.

Only time will tell... I would like to see a spear skill tree as well, even with a pilum kind of option inside.
The spears should be fragile to don't have such a big advantage through the multifunctional usage of it.

I would love to use 1h spear and shield, that would be nice.

They're cheap, easy to make, easy to use weapons. There's a reason they were as wide-spread in real history. For a game they'd be pretty hard to balance, since they'd likely be far too strong early on and far too weak in a late game where everyone has plate armor and giant greatswords.
It's not really great if an entire skill tree is only good early on and later gets too weak. This could be offset if it worked similarly to daggers in that you can easily swap to it. Maybe in the late-game you just throw the pilum/javelin as an opener and then swap to a different weapon. Could also be a good mid-way between melee and ranged weapons given that it would be the only ranged weapon other than magic that lets you make use of a shield against archers.

eh..not really ,in the late Cold weapon war most of it are pole weapon
they rule the war
because it's simply have advantage for range, price, and easy to use
even peasant can easily kill a long year training knight with it
and with heavier design it also can replace mace weapon

about "spear skill tree"
maybe when weapon is add,it will come with skills
for now it's not accessible but it there

I've not seen any one handed spears in the game, only 2 handers which ofc are already there under the name polearm, just not possible to use it yet.

That would be cool. Maybe some skills will.

Also, if they don't add a special skill tree for this weapon, what they could do is to allow some of the polearm skills (the ones that make sence) to be used with spears. I think some of the bow skills can be used with arrows and bolts.

And maybe the bow skill tree could allow to throw the spear: some of those skills could work with many throwing weapons.

Ofc, the best options would be to have a specific skill tree for spears and maybe a throw weapon skill tree too.

well,good news!
the pole weapon mobs do have skill that can attack range of 2 instead of 1

i do agree throw weapon should have it's own skill tree

You say that as if there were 1 handed spears in the game already, but afaik there aren't any? All polearms, spears, pitchforks, etc seem to be 2 handers at the moment. Have you seen NPCs with one handed spears?

But I do agree, some bow based skills like take aim could very well apply to thrown weapons, though I dunno how you'd attack melee with a spear if they were used like that. Personally I thought of the weapon as just a melee weapon that you can throw by using a skill button rather than that being the default click.
If there were a spear tree you could just have 2 different paths to go down on it, like, one path is for throwing it and another path to melee with it. And then the thrown path could have a passive skill that lets you swap weapons when you throw your spear, so that you immediately have your alternate weapon out as soon as you throw it. It would kinda suck if you had to spent an entire turn just to equip your second spear or your sword.
Also - This kinda brings back an old discussion about how many pilla romans used to have 1 or 2 in the sense that the game would have to decide if spears can stack and how that could be balanced.
Yosuf Feb 22, 2020 @ 4:37pm
@David what i mean is that if they don't add a skill tree specific for that (which would be the best), then they could allow skills of other trees to be used with spears: sone skills of the polearms could work when use them in melee, and some skills of the bow tree could allow to throw the spears too. Another option for the throwing could be to have a skill tree for throwing weapons.

Kind of disappointed I won't be able to make a Spartan Hoplite, but oh well.

Thanks for your quick answer! :)
