40 FPS Cap? Anyone Else?
Just finished the tutorial and "I am loving this game." Really wondering why it's capped at 40 fps for me though. I know it's turn based and you really don't need any more BUT it would be nice to bump it to at least 60. Is this a bug?

Hello. Sadly, it's a technical limitation of our engine. GMS2 uses outdated architecture, and because of that all in-game calculation and animation speed is directly tied to FPS. The higher the FPS rate is, the faster the game plays, meaning at 60 FPS everything would be 50% faster. 40 FPS is the most balanced value in that regard.

I just purchased and played through the prolog and got to open world. I have no screen tearing at all. My specs are:
9900k
2080Ti
32GB RAM
27 in BenQ monitor 1080p (i know...I will upgrade the monitor later....)
...no issues at all.

I don't get why people are getting so butt hurt about this game with only spending mere hours in a very early release of the game or even not playing it themselves???

I have only just come across the game didn't see it on kickstarter otherwise i'd of backed it, it's great fun and there aren't any graphical issues. it's a pixel roguelike game... get over it.

The game is really good so you should try the prologue for yourself. It plays well and streams well. I'm really enjoying it so far. I finally beat the first boss and I am hooked. Highly recommend it guys. If it was any other kind of game the FPS would matter and I would probably refund but again it works flawless for me so far and it's a great game already. Looking forward to seeing this gem develop.

I doubt the dev will see this, but why can't you adjust your fixed timestep? They talk about it for GMS2.

I asked this a few weeks back fwiw (not much LOL). Might be a bunch of stuff that needs to be manually altered as a result.

On my 1ms reaction monitor i see scren tearing when you looking around (midle mouse). V-sync not helping...

Meybe add some blur options to the game if not 60fps...

Now that I think about it, Hyper Light Drifter is also using GMS2 and has no issue outputting 60fps despite being animated at 30.

It's good some people won't mind and will be able to enjoy the game as is but as excellent as the game can be I really can't stand the lack of smoothness. Again, it's not a problem of low framerate, I can play Breath of the Wild on switch at 30fps and enjoy it, it's a problem with the erratic frame timing.

40 fps for me as well. Does not matter, its flawless.

Turn based games don`t need high fps

I am not quite sure if this is the same problem, but might be.

When I start the game, it runs nice and smooth, but when I get into the very first combat in the prologue, the game slows down and feels unresponsive.
Best example of this that I have is the first pyro skill "flame barrage".
When it runs smoothly, it fires the three projectiles "tap tap tap".
In slowdown, it´s more like "tap --- tap --- tap".

If it wasn´t for the part where it runs well, I could have written it of as just "annoyingly slow" and moved on, but since I know it can be better, it is very frustrating and I don´t know what´s causing it.

PS: 1 - I managed to somehow restore the speed in the demo after I reopened the game and reset after the tutorial. Couldn´t get it to work in the actual game.
PS: 2 - I checked a few YT videos just to make sure I´m not crazy.
Oh and sorry if I am in the wrong thread, but this seemed closest to what I´m dealing with.

Are you speaking about Stoneshard prologue, which is a separate game in Steam or about the prologue of the actual Stoneshard game? If it's the former I also have fps drops which can cause what you describe and even in the actual game I have a friend who has fps drops despite both of us having well-maintained gaming computers. I suggest using Steam's fps counter to see if it's a performance issue.

Fps drops would cause slowdowns in a GMS game since the animation is usually tied to the framerate, which is why it's even more important in these games to make sure performance is stable.

Even if it's not performance issues the game is locked at 40 and some people can't stand it especially when they are used to playing at 60fps or higher. Some won't mind and it's okay: according to the VCA, 6 people out of 10 need some form of vision correction and can't tell the difference between two different framerates. Still it's always a cringe moment when someone tells me the difference doesn't exist. :happyotus:

In any case, the game has a huge potential but it's really rough right now, even for an Early access title. I really hope the devs will improve the technical aspect.

I was actually talking about both. I tried the free prologue, then bought the game since I was fairly interested and hoping some of the issued would be sorted out.

And you are comletely correct. I enabled the FPS counter and in the menu I´m at 40, but the game immediately drops to about half of that. I am used to dropping some frames from 60 to about 40 in other games, but it isn´t too much of a bother for me. This, however, is a steady drop, and it STAYS that way without change. Would like to know what the issue is, as this doesn´t seem to be a particularly "needy" game.
I have a somewhat older laptop, but I run games like DOOM (2016) without problem, excepting an occasional stutter.

I hope there is some way to fix this, whether in-game or in the system.
And thank you for helping me clear things up a little.

So I´ve been playing for a few days, both in-game and IRL.
And for some reason this game appears to be the most demanding and/or poorly optimized thing I have ever greatly enjoyed.

I "solved" the FPS drop by setting the "effects" to low. Not medium, LOW. And it STILL drops when the weather gets misty.

40fps on a 144hz monitor really messes with my eyes. Wish there was 144fps option
KWAiRT Feb 22, 2020 @ 3:55am
Try playing console games on PS4 after running at 120-240 fps on a PC. It's like being drunk having your eyes sucked out of your head with a massive migraine lol. However if I can play Hunt Showdown on PS4 @ 30 I can surely play Stoneshard. At least it's not all frelling blurry.

Well, usually I am sb who wants to go the extra mile, either by playing ultrawide, using g-sync or playing 144 Hz for maximum fidelity. In this game the 40 fps are allright, with gsync it is just a smooth roguelike and I do not expect wonders. Just make the game as great as possible with your outdated engine and fill the world with life. Especially forests need some more of that ;)

Ah, the flex that is hidden as a status report ;) Well done, young Padawan, well done!
