But I'll partially answer your question. Followers aren't battle companions, but they unlock different valuable functions, otherwise accessible only in settlements, right in your Caravan. E.g. equipment repair, trade, enchanting etc.
So it adds some functions in the camp. Are you guys from the "bastard bond" game?... there is system like this also where you recruit NPC to do some enchanting, trade, repair, etc. But you can't bring them in combat.
I'll look forward for the detailed explanation of the follower system, and I hope there are some upgrading for the followers also, like better enchantment, better trading (more goods, more gold), something like that. Bring new recipes to your weaponsmith, then they have more diverse weapons to craft.
I believe there will be much more to followers than just unlocking valuable functions (which is already cool and necessary, like when you're stuck with a cursed item you can't unequip). The Caravan system, if I understood correctly, will be where you have the Housing and Cooking mechanics, and you can upgrade it in many different ways.
Judging by all the threads here that mention followers, and the Stoneshard Discord Channel where devs share updates and announcements almost daily, followers have much more depth than one might think, besides equipment repair, trade, enchanting, healing, cooking, etc.
Each follower has their own race, class, skills, personality, motivations and agenda. They are not static. Some of them will follow you (join the Caravan) out of plain power/money ambition, while others will be grateful that you saved them, and others might just share your own ideals and motivations.
As I understood it, some followers might also backstabb you if you're not careful. Also, I believe followers are not necessarily permanent, and you'll have to manage their mood, check their satisfaction, and needs, and even admin/manage a bit the relationships between them. I'm not sure if you can buy them gifts or give them loot they like like in Stardew Valley or Portia, but I do believe we will be able to interact with them in different ways, and build more meaningful, dynamic relationships.
If the Kickstarter Campaign goes well (fingers crossed), we'll might get many more races, classes and follower diversity (check the awesome stretchgoals).

Regarding "Bastard Bond", never heard before of this game until now (it's hard to keep track of every single game that comes out nowadays, with hundreds of new indies each day).
It looks quite... unique, different. Some nice mechanics, backgrounds, lore, character customization and classes seem interesting. But I'm not sure the Follower system in Stoneshard is similar to this one (the Stroneshard follower system seems perhaps deeper).
