What's everyone's favouite campaign mission(s)?
I feel like this is such a basic question, but I've never actually asked anyone this, so I'm really curious to hear what everyone has to say. My personal favourite is probably Counterattack. I really enjoy the originality to the mission; it's the only time you're left stranded without a recycler. It's also super fast-paced in the very beginning, as you start literally in the middle of a battle. Then, you have to go sonic fast over to the two abandonded scavangers, or an ejected pilot will take it over, leaving you screwed. I also really enjoy An Unlikely Rescue. No particular reason, I just happen to enjoy the tower defense style to it. I also seem to recall Hole in One (that's its name, right?) being a lot of fun, but I haven't played that one in a very long time. I'm excited to hear what everyone else has to say. I could also state my favourite Fleshstorm 2 (haven't played Fleshstorm 1, or any of the QFs, for that matter) or FE missions are, but I would never shut up haha

I'd have to say Counterattack too, being dropped in without a Recycler is quite memorable.

I also enjoy for various reasons The Dark Planet, The Wormhole, Snow Blind, Fanning the Fire, Ambush, and Core. Damn, there's quite a few cool things across all missions really...

Yeah, definitely, most missions always have a redeeming quality. Though, if memory serves me correctly, A Tratior's Fate (is that the ISDF mission where you only have a walker, rocket tank, and an assault tank?) is really the only boring mission in the whole game (the first four missions can't count imo, since they're an introduction to the game, and they also lay out the story). I must also mention I haven't played A Traitor's Fate in literal years, but memory tells me it isn't all that great. The story aspect of Escort definitely saves the mission, though the mission itself actually is still pretty fun, despite me usually not enjoying escort missions. Just saying the word "escort" gives me horrific flashbacks to Fleshstorm's 2 "Scion Toll" (though that mission was actually fun, but at the same time it was the most miserable thing). It also gives me flashbacks to FE's "Heart of Darkness", but that mission was only miserable for me because my game was glitched and the entire cave was extremely dark (unless that's intentional, but I've seen footage of other people playing the mission, and the cave is very well-lit). HoD was still playable, and I did have fun playing it, but it was also not as fun as it could've been should my game have not been weird.

Yeah, A Traitor's Fate is meh. I think being limited to a handful of units that you can't replace just doesn't do it for me.

Honestly I don't much like most of the vanilla campaigns.

All the Pluto and Dark Planet missions are tutorial, and I think there were some definite missed opportunities. I'm not really a fan of any of them. If you compare how fun Mars was in BZ1 to how annoying the Dark Planet is in BZ2 you can see why it looks pretty bad.

The Mire missions are okay, but they have issues. Through the Looking Glass is fun but way too easy and short.

Get Help sucks.

Rumble in the Jungle is a bit unreasonable. In the original game Gun Spires were way easier to kill so it was less of an imposition to assault the Scion base. If you get Shabayev first by flying over the mountain the mission is a cakewalk.

Let me also say that the Battlezone 2 Demo is FAR better than any of the Mire missions, and honeslty is probably my favorite mission and it isn't even in the game. I mention it because it uses the same map as all three Mire missions.

Snow Blind is basically a non-mission.

On Thin Ice is pretty fun but again way too easy.

Counterattack is fun, but holy God do APCs lag the everloving ♥♥♥♥ out of the game in this version.

Both of the Rend missions are decently fun. Fanning the Fire is a bit random in difficulty though so I definitely prefer Payback.

All of the post-split ISDF missions suck horribly. Traitor's fate is the best of the bunch but it's slow and boring, and it's entirely too easy to lose all of the ships in the ambush so you better have sinped some of the enemies.

Hole in One is my least favorite mission in the game by far, it's long and boring if you don't cheese it and it's designed to have Archers kill your Recycler from behind. You WILL lose the mission to this the first time it happens since if you are away from the base it's literally impossible to defend against that attack in BZ2.

Core is boring ass mortarspam. That mission could have been WAY shorter, no idea why they thought you needed to fight 20 of the same boring Laser Tank.

The Scion missions are more of a mixed bag. Transformation is pretty good for what it is, but nothing really amazing.

Ambush has been broken ever since 1.2, and it's just slow and monotonous. Originally you could build an Archer from the Kiln and a Jammer without building any buildings so it was a simple and quick mission. Now you have to build the entire tech tree.

Crystals is pretty fun, but again it's a bit too easy. The ISDF never sends any real meaty challenges your way.

Escort is okay, but it is REALLY frustrating how dumb the AI is in this mission. I always savespam constantly because I can't trust the AI to actually FIGHT the units that are fighting me even when directed to and the often end up killing themselves with lava or sitting there getting destroyed.

An Unlikely Rescue is really boring. Nothing happens for 10 minutes+ and then you defend a base from Walkers. Also there are some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ triggers that cause you to lose for no reason.

The AAN is a lot easier in this version. This is the only mission in the game where you fight a Bomber. Thankfully, Rocket Tanks are a LOT better about shooting it down before it drops the bomb than they were in past versions so this mission isn't too bad. Being able to link the weapons on your Warrior is nice.

Braddock is kinda lame. The whole early part when you get Scrap Pools is super weak, and the later part isn't a challenge since there is nothing stopping you from amassing a huge force to take Braddock down.

Honestly writing this all out... I kinda hate the missions in the campaign. If I had to give a favorite, it would actually just be the Demo mission. Seriously, the Demo mission was SO much cooler than any mission we got in the game. As for missions we actually got in the finished product, I guess it comes down to The AAN and Payback.

But seriously, look at how cool the Demo was, especially the voice acting in the opening cutscene. It almost seemed like it was an ACTUAL WAR. Also of note is that the end credits of the Demo show you the designs for Braddock, Shabayev and Manson.

Nah, I'd disagree on why the mission isn't too fun. Having few units doesn't make a mission boring. Not sure if you've played FE or Fleshstorm 2, but missions like (this is a minor spoiler, since I'm telling you the format of these missions, so look away now if you care to) "Rebuilding the Ark" from FE, or Fleshstorm 2's "The Fist of Hadea" are both missions where you only have a handful of units (though, I believe you end up getting a few more around the end of both missions, but it's pretty much the same concept), but they're both tons of fun (and definitely offer a challenge). The reason that "A Traitor's Fate" isn't good is because it's no challenge. You get in the assault tank, while being defended by your other two units, and just completely steamrole Manson. There's no challenge to it. You just do it and boom, you're done (you have to walk back to the beginning though, but close enough). Both of the aforementioned missions both provide a challenge, Rebuilding the Ark especially, but are still tons of fun, and give you a few different ways to tackle the mission. The lack of variety, and lack of depth both destroy "A Traitor's Fate".

the one thats also a strat map. deep blue sea.

yeah the one where you're dropped in at a base under attack and with no recycler.

I managed to save every unit and snipe 80% of the scions attacking. via jump sniping. just hopped from ship to ship to ship with the sniper rifle.
Loyal Patriot Mar 31, 2018 @ 10:53pm
Yeah, that's counter attack.
Red Spot Mar 31, 2018 @ 11:00pm
Counter attack, escort (for similair reasons).
The AAN (in v1.3, in BZCC its lame/easy).

The mission where you loose Shab is probably my absolute favorite. You can aproach the mission any way you want, pretty much ignore what you're told, or do exactly so. Chase after Shab and trigger a responce or hug your recy, etc etc.

All mission are a bit too easy to be really impressed by but those that make you fight and build at the same time early game, those are the best imo. Like the opening minutes of Crystals, awesome, then the real fun is quickly over :)

shab died when i hugged the rec too long in that mission

I'm in the middle of playing the campaign in BZCC. The biggest thing i've noticed is the AI has no clue what they are doing making it overall a little more challenging. I've always been bad at 1v1 combat so i largely depend on my AI. From back in the day I remember really enjoying counter-attack, payback. AAN, Braddock and Hole in One. Although i do agree that AAN being the toughest mission in the original being much easier in BZCC.

Cleaned the map doing Hole in One again. Was interesting. Now the AI keeps sending sets of Titans and flocks of Maulers that can actually do some damage. Still only had to kill the hauler in the end and not its escorts so overall still easier than in the original.

I just played Get Help again and it took me forever. I hated that mission when we were making the game and it still bugs me. It seems like it focuses on all the things the engine is terrible at: people physics, LOS, awareness AI.

Get help is easy, Climb up the right side, Snipe the Guardian MK 2 and then enjoy a luxury cruise to the end.

I sniped a warrior. It was a glorious no-scope through the water (I was underwater).
