How do i get the attendance items for event?

I go to the event section and click A. but it just takes me to the steam overlay about said event. If I'm lucky I might get something in the mailbox.

go to the event page IN GAME and press A or spacebar how it says. then it gets sent to your mailbox

It takes you to a webpage in the browser via a link in game that triggers the game to send you your reward. On mine it didnt send immediately, took like a minute.

Which is a stupid concept. It takes me to a webpage and it might take about a minute. This process of getting items should be simplified and more responsive (ie not take you to a webpage but goes directly to mailbox). Would help once they allow us to use the mouse to navigate menus. The whle UI is a mess.
