Although some folks might not understand the relation between the title of this thread along with it's initial post, between that and this post here; It's okay, really that's fine by me:
I will wait until after Monday before I decide to just start playing this game selfishly in off-line mode.
And, also not even bother to post on the game's Steam forum here, nor make any effort at all to contact the game's Developers about not just the test servers bugs and or other player-discouraging game features there, but also existing bugs and player-discouraging game features on it's public server version of the game too.
The reason(s) being,
.....The core reason is probably the fault of the Developer's lack of maintaining existing public media/forums about this game (maintaining, as in updating individual numerous web site(s) containing information about this game and it's current development.
(including on their own game's public website)
.....Apparently there is also not enough motivated players still interested in this game's development to put together even a meagerly helpful wiki or other fan-site for new players.
(again the fault of the game's Developers in the end)
.....The Steam forum is all but dead now. (or on what looks like it's last dying breath)
.....The test-server is trying to place to many additions into the game at one time, period.
Yes I've tried the test server, what I mean is: to many updated game features and or totally new features at one time for such a small Development team to handle.
Which makes the game so buggy that it is not just a chore to play there but a dread..
(all but one of my Steam games are in alpha-development, so it is not like I have no currency to speak about the function of alpha games and or test servers)
Anyway, for those who do (love this charming game as much as I do) AND do understand how this post is very much related to the thread's title and it's initial post:
Here is a link to help ya get along in this game as a new player. <----It is a YouTube compilation created several years ago by someone who obviously also enjoys this game as much as I do:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx-obHvHiB4&list=PLLvo6-XrH1flRR4GxoLIqZqU5_RW3j6wo&index=1
Sticky it as a guide here on this Steam forum for new players who enjoy playing this game but are frustrated with the lack of communication from it's small community of players remaining, and or frustrated by the seemingly blind eye of the Developers as to equipping new players to play such a extremely fun but also unforgiving game.
Again here is that link:

You are correct about unfinished things. I was not pleased when I made a key to get into the mansion in town just to find out that all i could get into was the entry. I needed another key. And then the door relocked the next day. In total I needed 11 keys to open all the doors, and there was nothing to get but some apples and boxing gloves. I assume there is more coming.
There are items that I'd like to make and have the recipe for, but the creature that drops them doesn't seem to exist yet. I have the best axe that the game seems to have, and half of the white knight armor and still have enemies that can one hit me. One of them, the mason, I cannot hit without being hit in return, and cannot run away, even when using haste. I figure it's the price I pay for running the test version. I don't have the experience with beta that you seem to though.
I would also like to see a wiki. I have a ton of information to add to it, but I'm not the one to write it. I don't even know how and don't care to learn how. I already spend more time in chat than I normally would.
But what do I do with my frustration. I post here. Every time I have posted, I have gotten a response within a day or two. I figure they wouldn't let me get the test version if they didn't want input. And I do what I can and watch for what shows up. I figure you care as much as that or you wouldn't have vented. Hope you find some satisfaction over time.
Oh, and there is a carnival. I ran across it once, but my I didn't have any of the tickets on me. I was weaker then and too busy trying to survive the night to pay it much attention. Sadly I don't know anything about what caused it to show when it did and haven't seen it since even though now I travel boldly across the world at night.
Thank you for the information about the carnivals, with that info I am motivated to plant more teleport's on the map as I explore it further, because like you, I don't want to have to carry all of those tickets on my character everywhere I go either.
Thanks again.
Thank you also for the quasi affirmations on my other noted observations too.
Our current focus is getting the test build fully stable so that it can be moved into the public branch. There is still a lot of work to be done so you can expect continued patches and updates that address the bugs that we are made aware of as well as new content that is being added as we go along.
Once we accomplish that we will be able to put more focus on providing a recipe guide and other information to help new players. Currently, we are relying on the posts made here by people playing the testing build to inform us about major problems and concerns.
I read the discussion forums for the game daily and endeavor to respond to virtually all posts within a reasonable time frame, so nothing that you post here will go unheard or unaddressed.
--------------------------------
The Dark Carnival does occur as an event in certain tile maps but is set for a revision. There's not a huge amount of things to do there at the moment but I suggest that if you have tickets to save them because they will be more valuable after the carnival is revised.
The towns still need a lot of work so you can expect to see issues all over the place in there but we have more town related updates coming down after we deploy the next update.
For me the game is very fun, although my experience on the test build were stifled in one 24hr day by a quick invasion of infectious zombies and encroaching thorn/vines.
Meaning, I hope you will give those two aspects a lot of your attention before releasing them.
The infected zombies invaded the map tile adjacent to where my spawn point and house was within a few short night cycles after me beginning the test build, that is when I left the test build and do not plan on returning.
....The thorn/vines were encroaching way to fast also.
I like the concept of the thorns, and the infected mobs too, but there needs to be ways(plural) to at least slow their spread made available for newer players.
I now have all the first white knight armor but for the boots. I still stay away from the thorns. There's a guy in there with a knife that can tear me up. I also, mostly stay away from the strong boarmen. I can do them, but it takes a bit. And if I see the mason, i use haste potions and try to draw him to other enemies.
I spend a bit of time underground. I set teleporters in the green tiles. I don't even bother with houses there. It takes a lot of iron ore to make the steel for the white knight armor. It also takes a lot of money. Breaking down stuff from the caves and selling it, seems to be the best way to accumulate money for buying the gold bits needed for the armor as well. In fact, breaking coal all the way down to black dust seems to be the most lucrative.
I started off the same way with teleports (20 tiles apart) but have since adjusted it to 5 tiles apart lol, because I still die so often.
Armor:
As soon as I find my first town, I will work on getting better armor.
Currently I am still focused on gathering large/big hides to upgrade my leather armor.
The giant boars are difficult to wrangle into spots where I can finish killing them.
....Are there other sources of large leather on the map besides the giant boars ?
Underground areas:
Yeah, I've only opened one underground area it was extremely close to my spawn point in the game so I just surrounded it with 4 rows of 4 houses each all connected in a doughnut shape.
making it my personal dungeon.
Once I become more comfortable exploring underground areas on the map I will open up more of them.
As of now, I'm still pretty vulnerable down there with my lack of combat experiences and my mid-range armor.
Find that town. The weapon shop will rotate inventory making it possible to buy some really good weapons if you have the cash. As for armor, I would upgrade your boar armor to max. White knight armor takes a lot to make. And first piece I made was the shield. Second was the helmet because it added the most actual defense compared to my old piece of armor. I have no idea how to make the next level of the white knight armor. I think one of the needed items isn't in the game yet.
When I was dying a lot, i discovered that I wasn't running enough.
I have the recipe for the Lumberjack Battle Axe Extender, but not one for the Blackstone one. I have all the parts for both. The lumberjack one doesn't work right now. I'm not sure the Blackstone one does either, but since I don't even have a clue what it needs, I cannot try it.
