DO NOT DO THAT. NOTHING THEY SAY WILL MAKE SENSE IF YOU DONT READ THE ACTUAL
COMIC.
Homestuck is an experience best experienced yourself. Just read it, it's a great webcomic. For me, at least, I understood what was going on better when I read it in the actual comic, and not on wiki pages and other things.
Can't guarantee that'll be the case, but hopefully exposure to Homestuck will genuinely be supplemental. There's certainly going to be visual references, from what I've seen, and small mentions to certain characters.
At the very least, I imagine the basics of troll society and stuff like that will be revisited in Hiveswap, since Joey and Jude don't know a thing about Alternia or trolls.
But I bet youll love Hiveswap so much youll WANT to read Homestuck. Its long but Im so happy I picked it up! <3
But in future I recommend you to read full homestuck.
No, but they do have a caste system based on their blood color.
and other people have already said it. oops.
Granted, being stuck to certain roles certainly would shape a person's outlook. And the violet-fuschia range tend to be nautically themed since they're seadwellers; purple and lower are landdwellers. Lower trolls on the hemocaste are also more likely to have powers like telekinesis, if I remember right? Hopefully, Hiveswap will remember to explain things along the way.
So you know how to identify the species in Hiveswap:
Trolls always have gray skin, black hair, yellow sclera (that white part of the eye for humans), and horns in any shape that are yellow, orange, and dark orange, and also always have six letter first and last names for some reason.
Humans are shown with white skin and black or white hair, and for some reason always have four letter names.
A Lusus is the all white creatures that can be/resemble any animal or mythical beast. They raise Trolls, acting as their guardians because Trolls don't have parental figures of their own species.
We have no idea what the black monsters with green insides are, they've never been seen before.
And here's a link to information about all the Hiveswap characters we know of so far.

edit: sorry, the link was giving me trouble -_-'
It's ALOT shorter yet still sets a good tone for the kind of wacky humor you can expect from Hussie.
Homestuck is quite different from Problem Sleuth but PS is a better starting point I think.
Of course, PS is also not at all related to the setting used, but as everyone else is already pointing out the part of the setting used in the game will definatively be introduced properly for the benefit of the people who don't want to read Homestuck first.
