How do you get hide?

you use a skinning knife equipped and click on a dead animal will allow you to skinning him after he was looted.

Equipped as a weapon, or equipped like how the other tools and such are? I have a wooden one in the skinning knife slot, but I can't get the skinning interaction to happen
