A D&D game where you don't get to make your own character?
I guess D&D must have changed a lot since I last played. The whole idea was creating your own character and exploring the world. Hard Pass on this

It's a Dark Alliance game; you've never made your own characters in those. This isn't "D&D", it's an ARPG that uses D&D/The Forgotten Realms as a setting.

He's not wrong though. The pandemic brought on a lot of posers that cannot fathom the idea of putting in the bare minimum to play. Both Critical Role and HarmonQuest literally script their "show" and the DMs have banned at table rolls.
It's by definition not D&D but these posers are all fueled-up on their successes with the Comics industry

Jesus it's a DA game, 1 and 2 were the same, you chose a character, you leveled them up, placed stats every 4 levels, chose skills or perks, eq etc. Seriously they are fun. i hope this one is nearly as fun as the first two were. It certainly looks very different.

It's an action version of DnD but very in theme and hopefully it will be a good game. I honestly can't wait if it's even close to as good as the old ones.

D&D is the world, the story is Forgotten Realms. They are using the main 4 heroes from R.A. Salvatore's books. It's about their story, not a 'new adventurer' story, like a tabletop D&D campaign. There are MANY fans out there who are excited at the idea of playing as Drizzt. If you played Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, they were the same way....waaay back on PS2.

Agreed. Calls itself Dungeons and Dragons and then does not let us make our own character. Fake D&D!

Also, I get tired of ranger and mage classes getting gender locked as female and the tough, warrior types are male. Such tired stereotypes get old....so do gender locked classes.

Oh well, at least I know to avoid this game.

There have always been some D&D-games that were not actually another transplant of the actual Pen&Paper-rules to RPG's.

There was even a D&D-arcade game.

And since this one is actually named 'Dark Alliance' there was a game called 'Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance' for PS2 in the early 2000's... not the best game ever (3 or 4 pre-made stereotypes for playable characters lol), but it was fun with friends. It seems like this upcoming one is going to be the same kind of game. A linear hack'n'slash set in the D&D-lore.

The characters in this game are all from a series of novels. They're gender locked the same way Geralt in The Witcher is gender locked.

BG3 is going the same route.

They are making the game for "Origin" characters who are pre-made by Larian. If you make a custom character, you miss out of much of the game. Just like in DOS. They want you to play the companions, not the main character.

^BG3 is ... not really a BG game. It's just kind of a D&D mod for Original Sin. : \

As someone who just recently started watching Critical Role, is that really true? Do they actually script it? Doesn't seem like it from the outside. Would love to see any evidence you have. That's really interesting.

Also, what do you mean by "the DMs have banned at table rolls?" Again, I'm only in the early streams, but it seems like everyone is rolling at some point or another so I don't know what you mean. Care to clarify?

D&D is the system, not the setting. Forgotten Realms is the setting (though it has replaced Greyhawk as the default setting).

No, the dude is either incredibly dumb, or just facilitating the meme. The Critical Role players joke about it a lot too.

D&D is an intellectual property with many systems and settings under its umbrella, its not A system.
