Fate/Extella in it's beat-them-all, hack and slash gameplay is a story about instinct vs idealism that is the whole conflict of Altera character. Your purpose and duty vs what your heart want to do and truly desire.

After the Holy Grail War, Hakuno arrive summoned by the Moon-cell on zone near a area called the "Zero-dark" a non explored area of the Moon-cell and find out they have been split in three. (Mind, Body and Soul). The Moon-cell is being invaded by an Alien being called Velber that try to control the Super AI computer and destroy Earth. They have to conquer territories with the help of the Regalia to stop the invasion.

They didn't just pick a historical figure with the concept of Altera. They added unique Fate lore with the White Titan Sephyr. Altera is a residue of Sephyr energy reborn as Attila the nun making her seek destruction as base instinct of her nature. While she doesn't enjoy destruction that her blueprint of her being. Cursing her in a never ending cycle of annihilation.

Those themes are compelling in itself if it wasn't for 2 major problem that is : the 2 surface level heroine and the mindless hack and slash combat.
Like Extra CCC and since the first entry of Fate/Extra. Nero and Tamamo are very surface level heroine with interesing character but they don't go really go deep in their conflict or struggle.
Nero while bringing novelty by her personnality is as far as she goes.
And Tamamo is hard to take seriously because her demeanor is poorly handled.
The game would be enough if it was only the Dawn Arc Route.

The combat is genuinely mind-numbing. I feel like I am lobotomized into a circle of actions that feel like a chore and each stage drag a lot depending on the difficulty.
It's a button mashing hell with occasional cool manoeuver. It's not well designed or feel smooth like DMC or Nier Automata. You just turn you brain off and press button with a limited moveset.

Fate/Extella fit more in Tsukihime theme how Born Inhuman can still feel human with Altera seeking warmth and closure wrapped awkwardly in a Fate prose of idealism. It feel honestly messy as Altera goes against her nature.

That why I am not recommanding this game and surely will not pay for Extella Link. It has interesing idea but those 2 major problem really bring down this game. The side stories was alteast fun but that about it.
