Where is my ax?

I am playing Chapter 2 and near the end, I lost my ax. Sammy caught me, I picked up the ax, and I fought off the smaller enemies but the ax disappeared before Bendy showed up. The objective told me to clear a path with the ax to escape but that is very hard to do without the ax and of course I died. Is this a bug? Did this happen to anyone else?

If you pay careful attention while breaking the boards just before Bendy appears, you can hear the axe break and if you look down you can see the broken pieces on the ground.

When Bendy appears the objective changes from "Clear a path with the axe." to "RUN!", at this point you no longer need the axe because the blocked path is now open.

The axe breaks because they knew people would try to fight Bendy with it when you have to run.
