Is the story supposed to be this short?
...or am I missing content that hasn't unlocked yet? 27 stages and three tiny routes. Why is it so ridiculously short compared to the first game?

Wasn’t the first game’s main story also around 22-25 stages?
It seem longer because of the side stories which are converted in to the extra stages in this sequel.

But if you are talking about the text amount then yeah, I also think that it seem shorter.

The story is *significantly* shorter. I cleared scenario 17 (first of the endings) in just four hours total.

And it's not just that there are fewer scenarios and zero sidestories (a massive disappointment in and of itself), it's that the story itself is much more truncated. Almost no time is spent on developing the characters; no information is given as to why Altera leaves Hakuno Kishinami's side to be with Karlus Magnus.

It's almost an insult compared to the character development and story arcs we got treated to in the first Fate/Extella, each of which focused on and fleshed out a character. Sure, the writing wasn't that great (and this one's writing is still bad), but it felt like I was getting something that belonged in the Nasuverse, and which engaged me with new characters who I, as the player and reader, was given cause to care about, in spite of who they were (Altera in particular). Not so with this game's villain, whose characterization is so paper thin that he might as well not exist.

I hear that this was more of an interquel than a sequel for the next game, but that doesn't excuse the frankly shoddy job that Marvelous and Co. did with the story and narrative. Besides, who is the next villain going to be? We've already blown up the giant space monster from pre-history in the first game, so unless BB wants to crawl out of some parallel universe that she's managed to bend to her will, then I can't see what a good next setup would be.

what triggers me the most is that why the ♥♥♥♥ does at one point the main character, Nero, and Tamamo meet up with Alchimedes, and they never acknowledge the events of the previous game, also at one point in that dialogue, the main char even says that he's never met the dude, fricken what? did the guy that write Link not the same guy that wrote Umbral Star? also wtf happened to corrupted Alchimedes and Corrupted Elizabeth? its a kick in the balls for the developers to not make this a good sequel, it feel like a 1.5, with a lot of plot holes....

The thing about Alchimedes also annoyed me, hope they would atleast explain it in the extra which I haven't touch yet.
But the fact that they went with "some kind of miraculous route where results from endings in the prequel are all jumble together made me feel like this one is actually another HA instead of sequel, interquel or whatever it called"
How the hell would Hakuno even met Altera if it wasn't for Alchimides though

Fate/Extra is known for its ridiculous retcons so I was not surprised by the gang NOT recognizing THAT one servant.

In terms of a sequel, I think they did not finish with All The Word's Lust (Kiara) as she was merely stopped for a period of time( CCC route was not canon btw lol) so she may return to get some payback and spicy scenes with Hakuno.

I’m glad the story is as short as it is, it doesn’t wear out it’s welcome. That said, there is still a boat load of stuff to do even after completing it, once in normal mode. I’m fully onboard with this as Musou games’ stories tend to drag for no good reason - let’s all be real, there isn’t some super great narrative going on here, it’s just a playful “oh crap, bad dudes, let’s get ‘em!”

Actually, it feels like a 1.5 because it's literally a 1.5.

If you look up Nasu's interviews/blog from when LINK was announced, it's basically what he says, this is more of a 1.5, shorter and more lighthearted, and "extella 2" (a proper sequel, in this case) will possibly come later.

I'm not sure if I can link but you can find a summary of his interview on grandorder reddit (just look up for "nasu link" or something).

That’s good to hear. I had heard that this was to be the last game they made in this Musou format. I can’t remember where I heard that, though.

Extella is easily one of, if not the best, Mousou type games out there. It’d be a shame for them to not do more.

If you look at material from the first Extella, there's actually more Velber ships. Velber 02 is Sephyr. There's other Velbers who may very well be a big plotpoint in the sequel if the dimension-hopping Archimedes returns.

The first game didn't have a longer story it had ridiculously long and unnecessary dialogues that lead nowhere new for hours and hours. You had 40 mins of unnecessary dialogue that didn't advance the story by a single bit and 15 mins of actual gameplay followed by another 40 mins of meaningless chit-chatting. Link corrected that and it improved the gameplay beyond my wildest expectations.

Well, I mean Altera says at the end of the third route that we will need all the servants that we can get for when Velber eventually returns, sooooo yeah
