Do I need to watch the Fate anime to enjoy this game?

I wouldn't mind watching it, but there's a crap ton of em' I don't know where to start.

I only watched Fate Stay Night, the original one, back in middle school a decade ago. So I don't know a clue about what this whole game is about and 95% of its characters. But as a hack and slash game, it's very fun.
So I would say maybe watch FSN to get an idea about the most basic concepts such as master/servants/command seal etc, and also because it's very good. But I wouldn't say you need anything unless you really want to understand and enjoy the plot.

It'll help for the basic concepts.

Masters/Servants, Noble Phantasms, Heroic Spirits, the Holy Grail Wars, etc.

This takes place in an alternate universe though.

You can play Fate Grand Order on iOS or Android and it'll explain stuff for you. The Extella series is closer to the FGO universe than the FSN universe.

I am a big fan of Fate series. Characters in Fate Extella link are from different works,Fate stay night,Fate Zero,Fate Grand Order...and so on, knowing the background helps you get on with it quickly

not really, the gameplay itself is fun enough to stand on its own, however you might want to atleast read up on the story of Fate/Extra to fully understand the story of extella link, umu

IIRC, Fate/Extella is based on an almagation ending of the various routes of Fate/Extra. Is it also based on the CCC route?

I wouldn't say you need to watch it. Fate Zero, Stay night and Apocrypha are superb anime. But this game also largely draws from the roster of Fate Extra - which is incredibly poorly produced and an insult to the other Fate series entries. Oh and well uhm the first game here had a story so badly written I wanted to vomit.

If you like musou games just go for it. If you hate repetitive hack and slash better skip.

Interesing I would not say Apocrypha is super actually I tend to see it as a watered down version compared to Fate Zero and Stay Night.

I dunno I only watched it once and loved it. But I've seen Zero and Stay night at least three times and still love them, so they are a bit ahead. I mean I felt the way of storytelling and the characters were equally strong in A.

Not really. Some of them are very boring and convoluted and some others are fun but also very convoluted. You could watch Last Encore that takes place in the same universe, but purists will tell you that won't be enough because of some cameo from some character from a previous series. I played the first one without any previous knowledge. The game play itself was enough to keep me going despite the long unnecessary exposition scenes. I watched all the anime series after playing the first one and they aren't that clarifying. Most people will give you a LOT of homework to do before playing this game but it's highly likely all you'll get out of it is you'll be able to say "hey! I recognize that guy!" when playing the game.

Yes and No. It will GREATLY (I cannot stress this enough) enhance your experience if you watch the Fate animes before playing this game but its not neccessary.

Alright so if you want to watch the animes and need a place to start ill give you a short summary.

Like Plot? Watch Fate/Zero first.
Like Action? Watch Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works (TV) first.

Whichever one you watch first watch the other after.

Optional : You can choose to watch Fate/stay night 2006 for the Fate Route since thats the only animated adaptation. Fair warning its not the greatest adaptation which is why I say its optional. (Fate started with a Choose your own adventure VN with 3 completely different storylines branching off a decision in the beginning. They are called Fate, UBW, and Heavens Feel. They are all canon)

After watching these move onto the Heavens Feel movies.

Then watch Fate/Apocrypha

DO NOT WATCH FATE/EXTRA LAST ENCORE UNLESS YOU HAVE PLAYED FATE/EXTRA!!!! DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE SAYING OTHERWISE!!! IT IS A CONTINUATION OF A BAD ENDING FROM FATE EXTRA!!!! MEANING YOU WONT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING UNLESS PLAYING THE GAME!!!!

Anyways after this watch Kaelid Liner Oath Under Snow the Movie.
Then watch Grand Order First Order, and if its out by then the Babylonia anime.

its not needed really, i mean if there was any fate related thing that would help get to know more about these steam games it would be the mobile game fate grand order over any of the animes as there limited in what servants are on there and those that are here while grand order deals with off them as well as the fact this game takes place in the same universe or what ever as the mobile game while the animes are there own thing and some times in the case of the stay/night movie a sperate time line or.....-sigh- fate illya which is catered for perverted degenerates...
