What is the true level cap for the captain?
My captain is post level 10 and just unlocked his fourth skill slot(and I didn't even know such a thing existed). I primarily focused him on being a scientist with emergency healing and bandages. Now that he's got clean bill of health and his new fourth slot possessing the resurrection skill, he's practically almost unstoppable. So my question is... how far can he go? Short of dying of old age, that is.
I'm also finding level 10 as the cap for the regular crew mates to be a bit anemic. Depending on your crew composition and whether you hit a series of bad rolls, old age whales could easily wipe out level 10s in a few swipes, especially doctors which have garbage health, but I've even had whalermen wiped out in bad battles. I'm slowly adjusting my crew to have gunners and die hards, but are there any plans to increase the level cap or add in ways to get around this restriction?

The captain level cap is 20, while, at the moment, there is no plan to increase the level cap of the crew. Clearly, if the problem is having them die too much, there could be balancing fix to increase their health points or decrease the creatures damage.

Cap’m can get up to level 20 with 5 skill slots - pick wisely because you’ll never get to pick any more.

I find level 10 crew to be quite sufficient - often I’ll fire them and hire lower-level guys with attributes I want. You need a whalerman and a harpooner for each boat - I usually try to evade/confuse 1 whale and kill another on the first turn, and usually mop up on second & third. It’s been ages since I lost a man in combat - although I’ve lost several to random events. Make sure you have a big-enough ship - you can’t take on 3 old blue whales with one whaleboat and hope to win.

I have a Clipper now because speed is more important to me than cargo size. It just hit four stars yesterday. Damn thing was a bit hard to find because the game likes generating Barques or Barquentines.
BTW, I play this game on the GOG version.

I don’t know what GOG means. I used clippers for a while, then decided to switch to a barkentine for the bigger hold. The speed change isn’t that remarkable when you have a high-level sailor with an enhancing object and good sails...

GOG is one of the other game download sites. They only sell DRM free games, though. And since they're now owned by CD Projekt Red, the Witcher games and Gwent are their main bread and butter.
