Your preference for Big Boat: Clipper or Barque?
I was going through the ship list as I unlock research slower than I make money. Scanning over the higher price boats, that I also can't unlock, noticed the Clipper and Barque seem to be the two options for final ship.

Note that game stats may be based on my current research levels, your own may vary.

The Clipper is faster at 10 knots with cargo 141
The Barque is slower at 6 knoys with cargo 211

Both have 3 whale boats and all the equipment positions. 80 hp for the ship as I see it.

Clippers need Sails 3 (looks like the ship's helm wheel) to unlock while the Barque Shevles 3 (looks like a barrel)

The basic comparison is the Clipper is faster by having a streamlined shape that isn't as effecient on fitting cargo. The Barque is more like a shoe box so more cargo but far worse sailing.

One comparison I see to do is the knots*cargo. The Clipper wins at 1,410 vs the Barque's 1,266.

However there is alot to be said of play style and what quests you are doing. Long range hoping between zones the Clipper is handy. However the Barque can fill up 50% more from that field. The fields may dry up before the Clipper can make a second run.

In real life the Clippers were made in part due to speed along perishable cargo like fish or tea from China. Yes really. China tea Clippers are a thing. Canada's dime has the Bluenose on it, a multi award winning Clipper from the fishing industry. This is before "factory" ships could freeze fish at sea. In the game Spoilage isn't really represented much except by the odd random event.

What are folks thoughts on using these ships in the Nantucket game?

I went clipper and will never go anything else. I used the faster basic boat too (sloop I think?) and it let me have three reasearches going at once since it got around so fast. I found cash to be worthless when you got the largest size ship, I highly doubt you'll mind the smaller cargo hold.

How about Barquentine?

Barquentine would probably be 8*176 against the numbers above = 1408.

However those aren't the final numbers for those ships. Cargo space doesn't change as much, only between different ship quality and Shelving tech, but you can get fairly higher than the base ship speed with a decent L10 Helmsman and Sails tech.

Ship quality affects both speed and cargo space. I'll probably go with the Clipper, but having higher cargo space would be nice too. Barquentine & Barque are only better than the Clipper if you need the extra cargo space... which is possible.

I've sold my clipper for Barquentine and found that the increase in load is not worth it... {gives u the ability to farm 3 times whales before hitting dock whereas clipper will almost be full with 1 whale attack}. I regretted selling my clipper thereafter as the speed of the ship went down really fast.
In late game, if you invest in blubber oil and have a craftsman to melt it down, cash will be plenty for you. Therefore there is no real need to get a bigger cargo space, because there is no trading (from port to port) in this game. Unless we can have a merchant class where you get exp from actively trading between ports, but even then you can do it on a clipper as well.

Speed > load

By the time you will have the technology to buy tier 3 ship you will be swimming in money, because the real cash maker is a tier 2.

You are able to make oil and confront bigger whales starting with 6 crew. 6 crew with average stats cuts about 50% of money and blubber to oil ratio is about 66%. So because price blubber/oil is 50% you should add 16% to oil price and cut it in half. Average oil price is 45 so real price of oil which is your income is 26. The income from food is direct and prices are between 20-29.

Oil is precious only if your crew lay is low ,and price of oil is high. In the endgame, with ten people you are making money on food. The problem is there is nothing you can spend it for.

Also with average 10-16 knots I don't need to speed time at all.
