Get rid of some of the hand-holding restrictions
When it comes to building and repairing computers there are often multiple ways you can fix a particular issue. I am finding that lots of the repair requests have obviously been planned to only accept a specific method of repair and if you try another way then you get blocked.

For example, I've been asked to overclock a guy's computer. Never done this in real life so I cannot make any comparison to reality but in the bios it says that increasing the CPU speed or the ratio can cause the CPU to heat up and use more power. I overclocked it and ran a stress test and it kept failing the stress test.

I don't actually know what failing the stress test means but I decided to try and give the guy a more powerful power supply and a better CPU fan to keep it cool but the game won't let me do either. It will only let me put the owners original parts back in.

Obviously the developers want me to solve the issue a different way but even so, If I decide to swap out a customer's parts for other parts then I should be able to do that without the game stopping me. It may be a mistake but it is my mistake to make.

The reason you can't do that is a long time ago people would be swapping out a customer's parts for vastly inferior parts and then completing the job and keeping the superior parts so they had to patch it this way. We used to have a lot more freedom on overclock jobs but a few bad apples ruined it for the rest of us.

That said the overclocking in this game is very easy. You just need to understand it a bit.

Firstly, when the blue screen crash happens it displays a message. That message has a crash code in it and those codes mean something. People have written guides for us to explain what those mean. Here's a link to the guides section and look at some of the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) guides: https://steamcommunity.com/app/621060/guides/?searchText=blue&browsefilter=trend&requiredtags%5B%5D=-1

Secondly if it's possible within their budget sometimes you don't have to overclock anything. For example: If they ask you to overclock their processor to 4500 Mhz then you can look in the store and find any processor that has a stock / default speed of 4500 Mhz (or faster) and just swap that in and auto-complete the job without having to do anything else.

Also you have the OCCT program in this game. You can use that to see what the temps are. If a video card goes over 95c it will crash. If a CPU goes over 100c it will crash. If the temps are that high then that's part of it. You can also replace all of the case fans in the computer with different fans of a higher CFM rating and it will improve overall cooling in the system. Also you can run OCCT in infinite mode and "wait for the power draw to flat-line" to see where their power draw is. For example: If they have a 600 watt power supply and OCCT flat-lines out at 400 watts when you overclock it then power isn't the issue.

I'm sorry but that sounds like laziness on the part of the developers. This is supposed to be a simulation. Unfortunately there are computer repair companies out there where you will be ripped off and have your good parts swapped for inferior parts if they think you don't know much about computers.

The current system of putting post-it notes on parts you take out and only allowing you to put those parts back completely takes away from the realism of the game. You are no longer a person running a computer shop. You are now a person working in a computer shop while being told what you can and cannot do by an invisible boss.

I find it disappointing that the developers were too lazy to program this game to recognise when people are swapping good parts for inferior parts and then punishing the player with poor customer reviews which in turn lower the amount of business you get.

Thanks for the advice regarding Overclocking though.

If you dislike the game that strongly and you have less than 2 hours played you can go file for a refund.

No, it is only a small part of the game and I can learn to live with it. The rest of the game is very good but I find it annoying, not only in this game but in many games when developers restrict certain things because they are trying to cater to players who want to exploit the game. It is unnecessary because it is a single player game. If you care that much about how much money you make in the game and you want to exploit a game mechanic to do so then so be it. The developers shouldn't waste their time trying to combat that. Instead they could have used that time to create a value system for different parts and a resulting action from it.

For example, if a player sends me his computer and asks me to clean his computer of viruses and I choose to open it up and swap his Intel Core i7 with an i5, then the game should let me do it but then, from the customer, I should get a 1 star review with the comment, "Don't trust this guy. I asked him to clean my computer and he downgraded my CPU." Then there could be a drop in business.

I just don't see why developers will spend so much time creating mechanics to ensure a player plays the game the way they want it to be played. In a multi-player game, fine. The game has to be played the same by everyone for fairness. In a single player game, if you cheat, you are only cheating yourself so who cares?

It's probably because the developers intend this game to be used in a teaching / educational setting, see here: https://www.pcbuildingsim.com/education In that situation they try to teach "Best practices in the computer industry". Which means not stealing from customers.

The job's parameters are to complete the job without replacing parts that you don't need to replace.

Success in the game requires you to complete jobs within their parameters.

If you need help on a specific job, I recommend asking in the Discord server, and being ready to share a save file, which makes it very easy to help when someone is stuck.

Good luck. Enjoy.

They could also have had the customer withhold payment.
