Does size really matter? Ryzen 7 7840U vs Ryzen 7 3700X vs Ryzen 3 7335U
Hello, another apples to bananas comparison? Actually, no.
I am a gamer, soon turning 30, with 20 years of gaming experience. And I actually struggle with basics of hardware power output. I am trying to study it, so I apologise for my incompetence.
Comparing raw power of Custom Zen 2 (PS5) and Z1 Extreme (Most of modern handhelds) I started wondering: how come a smaller device has 10% more raw power?
Isn’t silicon, spacing and any physical features are better with bigger chip?
Simply saying, better cooling and as a matter of fact - better performance overall with bigger chip?

Comparing these chips is hard, even though they are all manufactured by AMD. But when I keep it to paper - modern handhelds are simply more powerful than PS5. When it comes to real game testing, however, handhelds behave like they are drunk, with incredibly terrible performance, aka low FPS, crashes, stuttering and Integrated GPU related issues. Somehow, PS5 integrated GPU behaves so much better than integrated graphics of any handheld.

My question is: why is it so? PS5 chip vs handheld chips: aren’t they completely different and thus handheld chips are garbage?
PS5 is basically Ryzen 7 3700X, while any high end handheld is around Ryzen 7 7840U. And I mean price checks out. You can get PS5 for 350 USD and high end handheld for 650 USD.
So what’s wrong? Why is performance so much worse, despite being better on paper?
Is it about size of the chip? Or is it only optimisation related? If so, I still struggle to believe that handheld chip can outperform desktop one because they have different physical features. I mean PS4 chip was akin to mobile, but PS5 one must be different story.

___
And as for bonus question, what is going on with SteamDeck’s Zen 2 aka Ryzen 3 7335U? Why is it two times less powerful (on paper) but somehow in reality reaches the raw output of Ryzen 7 7840U? What in tarnation?
I can understand how PS4’s Jaguar was bad and why Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go etc, can reach level of PS4. I mean AMD chip for PS4 was not the high end stone. But how come devices like Lenovo Legion Go, Ayaneo Chicabumbum, GDP prg etc manage to compete with PS5? Because at least on paper they can. And according to many benchmarks, they are more powerful.
Isn’t desktop chip of PS5 is 8 years ahead and all?
