Stuff for My Daughter's Pc
So I got the quest, titled above. Bought an 8 gigabyte stick of ram, only to find it was incompatible. So I went back, bought 4 4 gigabyte sticks of the same kind as the one in the pc, only to find that those were incompatible as well. The Mhz is the same and so is the type. Am I missing something?

RAM upgrades require:

-To be of the same Brand
-To be of the same Model
-To be of the same Speed
-To be of the same size

man i feel hella stupid rn. i was like same size but theres only 4 slots and that would be 8gb! my dumbass kept the 2gb stick in so it wasn't working.

It's an easy mistake. it'd work fine IRL. I have no idea why they programmed the game that way.

while it may work IRL, it's not considered BEST practice, and while you can do that yourself on your own PC, if you got an upgrade from a computer shop, and they do mix RAM and it's unstable, pretty sure you could go after them.

Don't forget you run a buisness, you don't build PC's for free for your friends / family in this game.

I wouldn't assume it was best practice now, but back in the day when I worked retail that's what we did - just quoted prices based on the upgrade. Never replaced ram as that would be a waste of money in most cases. We never mixed speeds... but brand? all the time! Only carried like two or three brands. 90% of our customers wouldn't have liked the price quote on all new ram I'm sure. That said, I have no idea what shops are doing now - I've been out of it for a dozen years.

I'm still going to insist if it's on a separate channel it doesn't matter in the least tho. Last mobo I had even said it didn't and it would prioritize the faster channel. Of course if you want the duel/triple/quad channel benefits, that set of ram must match. On a side note, I'm kinda surprised the game doesn't elaborate on that more. I can't say if is is or is not modeled into the scores as I've not tested for it, but there seems to be no explanation of the benefits.

That's not how ram works in real life. In real life if you mix and match speeds of ram then the entire ram (even the other sticks that are faster in speed) will all always run at the lowest speed of the slowest ram stick installed. There is no "Priority" with ram, just a correct installation order. You have to populate slots A1, A2 before you can populate B1, B2 for example. You can't just run computers with ram in the second channel slots only.

I'll see if I can dig up the manual for the older board before I claim too strongly what I think I remember seeing ;)

As far as putting ram in any slot.. that's absolutely incorrect. First, the manufacturer says you can. Secondly, I know from personal xp that you CAN put them wherever. I've tested this myself. (While testing to find a bad ram chip tested all eight slots with about every order imaginable of 1, 2, 3 or 4 sticks.)
