For a compatibility list you can look into this guide:

By the way, the different dirve speeds matter only for system bootup time. 3DMark scores are not influenced by drive speed.
I am not as concerned with the 3DMark scores as this game is, I would just rather have the best M.2 stick I can afford.
In game this precludes me from using any of the faster M.2 sticks - as I said, an oversight.
- The developers need to submit the 3D models of motherboard and M.2 SSDs to the diffetent manufacturers for licensing.
- After a 3D model gets licensed it may not be changed or only through a new licensation process.
- M.2 SSDs with pre-attached heatsinks are relatively new products. The first models available in history came mostly without heatsinks. Therefor the majority of the existing mainboards might have been licensed way before the M.2 SSDs with heatsinks might have become a thing. So no removal of the motherboards' heatspreaders allowed.
- The developers obviously maintain a (hidden) compatibilty list for fitting M.2 SSDs. Unfortunately this data is nowhere displayed in game. But to maintain this list means that they have to put in extra work hours for every new board/SSD combination. They would not have to do this work if they made either one of the heatsinks removable.
Consequently this whole mess must be a deliberate design decision by the developers.
